Actually, going up the Cajon Pass grade would take as much as a couple of hours at 12 to 15 mph. At 3 to 4 AM the constant droning of the locomotive made it very difficult to stay awake.

No. It's actually short for railroad engineer. I just retired from 25 years of driving freight locomotives in the Southern California area. Up and down the Cajon pass every day.
