Being to bloody smart,pig headed and knowing more than JR,I finally resorted to the manual and behold. I had failed to put the SLAVE in PPM modulation.

You certainly do not need a spring starter for the G38 and besides the extra weight of the unit, the one way bearing tends to break down after little use.
