The Half 8 accepts 540 sized motors, so that is the size of pinions you will need. The Himaxx, is the Novak BL system origanally designed for the E-Maxx right? Than those pinions should also work....

Are you useing dogbones? It could just be the dogbone spring has gone missing. Thats one of the easier things to check for, and a very possible culprit.[8D]

The FT Kit should include some sleeves. A good upgrade is to swap out the dogbones for some MIP CVD's. That also elimanates the need for the dogbone spring and the sleeves.
