Why would you want to cut up a large side of the cowl for a side mount? You will find that a fairly large area of the cowl needs to be removed for an upright mounting, but that cylinder...

This will get easier as the wing halves "break (hope not) in", and with repeated use. I gently balanced the wing on the top of my sneaker at the field, and carefully pulled the top apart...

I would epoxy the Fin/rudder + Stab/elevator. Those small bolts and lock nuts tend to loosen. Leave the wing as per the manual. It works just fine.
