RE: carbon fiber spars

Maybe this will help answer Bluehawks question about the tube.

Think of it like a flag pole. It is strong enough to support the flag in the wind but it waves around because every material has...

RE: carbon fiber spars

That is one of the most comprehensive, informative answers I have ever seen on here. Thanks for that.

RE: 4-Stroke engine size recommendations?

Grey Beard, This Bipe is only now getting to the mechanicals of the plane. The coming of summer, family events and way too much work led to this project getting shelved for a while. I am just now...

RE: Sterling PT-17

My kit is the Sterling 64" FS-20 and my plans show a CG on the top wing of 4-15/16" back from the LE for R/C.

Good luck,
Jim

RE: Conrol throws for Bipe

Gray Beard, Thanks for the input. That kind of info/preference is exactly what I was looking for and very helpfull. I typically build with extra power, but since I aim to fly this plane as close to...

RE: Conrol throws for Bipe

Thanks a bunch guys. I have the Real Flight Simulator and have been practicing with the Stearman, but simulators only go so far. I have noticed the need for throttle to land cleanly as the plane...

RE: Conrol throws for Bipe

Thanks for the info LNEWQBAN, The Super Stearman, if I remember correctly, has ailerons on both the bottom and top wings so I don't know how to relate that but the other controls should be similar. ...

RE: Conrol throws for Bipe

Wow, I would like to thank everyone for the zero replies. Evidently people who fly biplanes don't read this forum, or know how type, or something.

RE: Stearman Setup

Thanks Gunner, I usually like my planes a little snappier also, rather than sluggish. Maybe I could ask a follow up question then. Would you consider those throws high rate? Go 60% of that for...

Stearman Setup

I am nearly finished building a 64" Sterling Stearman PT-17. The plans do not include any control throw specifications. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good starting point for Aileron,...

Conrol throws for Bipe

I am nearly finished building a 64" Sterling Stearman PT-17 Kit. Does anyone have a good set of starting control throws for this plane? This is my first Bipe so I don't have any baseline to start...

RE: Sterling PT-17

I am nearly finished with one of these 64" Sterling Stearman PT-17 monsters and have a question. What are the beginning or current working travels for the control surfaces? The plans don't say...

RE: How do most of you shape a leading edge?

I wish I had thought of the PVC idea as well. I instead threw some money at it and bought a set of diamond grit radius files that are basically 90° sections of steel conduit coated inside and out...

RE: How do most of you shape a leading edge?

Just a two cents worth. I have found the $7 razor plane to work in many locations that the larger / heavier planes just won't. Sometimes the size or nature of the area being created just requires a...

RE: 4-Stroke engine size recommendations?

Just a little follow up on this question. I have decided to purchase a Saito FA-91 engine to power this plane. I found several examplesof other builders who used 90 size engines with good results. ...

RE: Mounting a Saito 1.20 inverted

I believe you may have misunderstood part of my post. I built I-beam spars for the wings, even though the kit comes designed for beam mount engine, I will be using a standard engine mount design...

RE: Mounting a Saito 1.20 inverted

Okay, Okay, but before I get off my 'puter i have another thought. I haven't found out anything about thrust on these plans. I typically have built in a couple degres off right thrust and sometimes...

Mounting a Saito 1.20 inverted

I am building a plane with the intention of mounting my saito 1.20 inverted. The original plane it was in ran beautifully with it upside down but I am looking for opinions on Saito engines right...

RE: 4-Stroke engine size recommendations?

John, can I ask how big the planes you are referencing are? I Believe the GP Stearman is around 70" if I remember correctly. Does it have extra power or is the flight more "scale". I am a fan of...

RE: 4-Stroke engine size recommendations?

Thanks again. Grey Beard I like the way you think. I was considering moving the firewall backwards because the length of the OS 1.20 is way more than the original design allows but your last post...

RE: 4-Stroke engine size recommendations?

Thanks for the replies. I think I will stick with the 1.20 like I originally planned even though it seems big. I had a smaller bipe several years ago the flew with the .80 and thinking back on that...

4-Stroke engine size recommendations?

I'm building a 64" wingspan Stearman PT-17. An old Sterling kit as a matter of fact. Ha, I should say that I am building the plane from scratch with the kit as a guide since most of the kit is...

RE: carbon fiber spars

Yes, it is a Sterling kit. The LE and TE are notched but the spar is solid. They are just warped and made out of the softest balsa available, I don't believe they will be strong enough to take any...

RE: carbon fiber spars

Just a bit of follow up info, I have decided to laminate carbon fiber strips to the top and bottom of the existing balsa spars to both straighten them and strengthen them. If anyone has any info...

RE: carbon fiber spars

Dave, thanks for the reply. The kit originally came with 5/16x3/4 balsa front spars and 1/4x1/2 balsa rear spars, the manufacturer had originally supplied maple spars but in order to save weight...
