Dynaflite PT-19 Woes

The full scale plane had lots of dihedral - it was a basic trainer and a very mild flying plane. I had no trouble building Dynaflight PT-19 and am planning on building another. It is a very good...

soldering woes

Like Tim Taylor says "More Power" - in this case, more heat. For big jobs, use a torch. They are inexpensive in any home store, a regular butane one is plenty hot enough. Don't heat the metal so...

Spad Xiii

RCM ran plans for a Spad - it might have been a VII - a few years ago. It should be in their plans catalog. It was 1/5th, as I recall.

Sig Koverall, Do I need to dope it??

I have had pretty good results from attaching the Koverall with Stix-it, then sealing the fabric with water-based polyurethane. A couple of coats, sanding in between. The WBP dries to the touch...

proctor jenny

John,

I'd be interested as well, as I have an older Proctor 1/6 scale Jenny next up on the workbench.

I'd be interested in hearing what fabric/paint system you used. Right now, I'm leaning to...

sig citabria

Sporty -

The Sig Citabria is one of the older kits on the market. It flies well and builds light, but it is not a 'shake the box and it falls out' 3D-jigsaw puzzle like some modern kits.

Living dinosaurs in the kit world

Big Max - you're right about Phil Kraft vs. Joe Bridi. Maybe the general similarity of the two planes confused me.

Living dinosaurs in the kit world

I'm a big fan of the old kits - they fly well. Just finished an Andrews Minimaster, and there is always a Kaos ready to go. Finishing a Kougar now. The Aeromaster is still in production by Great...

Sheeting Foam Wings

rajul -

The 'shucks' are the part of the foam block you don't use.

Say you have a rectangular block of foam from which a wing panel is to be cut. Call it roughly 4" thick by about a foot...

Sig Koverall Question

Forgot - you can also use Koverall over the entire project, sheeted and open areas, adhered with dope, or water-based polyurethane. That works well too. I've used all these methods with success. ...

Sig Koverall Question

Yup. Epoxy thinly applied with lightweight fiberglass works well. You can also use dope and silkspan tissue, or dope and fiberglass. Or water based polyurethane and glass or tissue. The goal is...

Sheeting Foam Wings

Rajul, and nmills -

Yup. It sticks right away and the times I have had to pull it apart (like making an opening for a servo or landing gear or something) the wood is firmly bonded to the foam.

Sheeting Foam Wings

I'm suprised this thread has not talked more about Dave Brown's Southern Sorghum. I've used it for years with no problems at all. Being a contact cement, you do only get one chance, but by making...

need help....

You know, you could always just get a Saito 1.80 and use the YS on another project. Expensive, I know, but the 1.80 is a really nice engine and you can never have enough different engines...... (the...

Overweight AT-6 question

Sounds great - I'll give it a shot. Adding a gasser might be a plan too - esp. if the 1.08 doesn't have enough power.

Overweight AT-6 question

Thanks guys - Even if I go with a gasser, the all-up weight would have to be the same. The wing area is 1000 square inches, so that comes out to about 2.75 pounds per square foot (.31 oz. per square...

Large scale decal/markings question

I just finished the heavy AT-6 mentioned below. It's my first large scale kit - finished with latex and clear Top Flight topcoat. Came out great - except for the stars and bars markings that came...

Overweight AT-6 question

I have finished a Midwest AT-6, powered with a O.S. 1.08. I had to add a *lot* of lead to the firewall to get it to balance. This is my first big warbird - it weighs 19 lbs. and 6 oz.

Should I...

Top Flite Elder 40

No - it is a kit designed to emulate the monoplanes of the pre-WWI era. The Antionette, Sommer, and Bleriot were pre-war monoplanes of note, there were many others. During the war, the German...

add balsa to the leading edge

Jonboy -

If you're asking on how to do this? - I'd sheet it with 1/16 back to the main spar, then use cap strips feathered back to the trailing edge. Or, cap the trailing edge and center section...

1/4 scale sopwith pup kit covering problem

Eindekker -

For scale planes of 1/5 scale or larger I have been using the pink hairsetting tape with good success. The surface finish is a little 'bumpy' - but a couple coats of nitrate dope...

doping and silk ?

Beaumiller -

I would go ahead and do the fabric and dope or water-based poly on the models you mentioned - especially the Liberty Sport and King Kobra. I think dope is a little lighter overall...

Propfinger,

My .02 here and I've tried just about all the covering systems in 20+ years in the hobby.

A quality iron-on job will take about the same time as a good fabric job - some guys like...

1/4 scale sopwith pup kit covering problem

I was looking at a set of 1 1/2 Strutter plans by Reeves just tonight, and thinking the same thing.

I would also use brush-on glue, but trying to make a seam at the back on the wire I think would...
