RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Thanks man.

Love the smoke on the video. I think I've pretty much talked myself into adding a smoke system. Based on reading up on the RCG engine you mentioned using, I think I'm only about...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Thanks guys, I do have an incidence meter, I'm probably goin to get her assembled tonight. And check incidences and double check the actual cg as well. Will report back tomorrow.

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

I must be balancing my plane wrong, I can't figure out how people are flying these happily at 5.5 inches back. I like 'ECM tail heavy and this was simply no good at that cg.

I'm going to...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Thanks guys.

Interesting that you changed wing incidence popphil, one of my initial thoughts during the first flight when the plane kept ballooning was whether the wing incidence was too...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Well, 2 years later i finally got the maiden done. (Kids make it really hard to go out flying)

Conditions:
43 degrees, winds gusting to 8mph, humidity~75% overcast with short bursts of...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

BTW, as balanced, I'm at 11lbs 2oz rtf. With the Saito 180 up front on 30% heli fuel, it *should* have unlimited vertical.

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Still afraid to fly mine as balanced, it's slightly tail heavy at 135mm back from center of top wing. I still have room to move the Throttle servo and battery up front (4-5oz) but I'm holding off...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Plane is programmed and nearly ready for maiden.

I'm significantly concerned about the CG on this plate, measuring 135mm back from LE of the top wing (even though the instructions say 110),...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Finally got to make a few updates, (wow twins are a lot of work!). I got the aileron servos and pushrods done and got most of the radio equipment in. I did a weight check and I'm at 11lbs 2oz. The...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Just received the aileron servos and remaining regulator, switch and battery I needed. I've not had much of a chance to work on it yet, but will post updates as soon as I do. Weather still...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Wish I could say I have! Besides the twins keeping my wife and I VERY busy for the first week of life, I'm waiting on a few ordered items (aileron servos and a new regulator). I also need to setup...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Given the plane is probably 75% done and is mostly assembled, I decided to do a weight check. Currently we are at 10 lbs 12 oz on a postal scale.

I still need to add:
Aileron servos and...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

More progress over the weekend and some notes and tips:

1) The cabanes mounts in the wings are set for the right angle to get the two wings centered over each other, the fit is pretty good...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

More updates in the gallery. Got the nose done, cowling cut nicely and mounted. I stole this idea from DP airplanes, put a small piece of fuel tubing on your cowling screws and use as a rubber...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

I didn't about the full size pushrod so thanks for getting me educated Mav.

I've no clue why the bipes in general aren't more popular, maybe people think they are too complex? I definitely have...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Newly discovered tip of the day:

When cutting a fiberglass cowl, instead of trying to route it out with a dremel and making a complete mess, drill a small starter hole at the beginning of the...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Interesting, I didn't realize the 1:1 Model 12 actually has the pushrod for the upper ailerons exactly like this model does (in stock form). Now I'm wondering if I should ditch the 4 lite servo...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Yes, as configured, the kit actually is built to use two servos for the elevator. If you look at the radio mounting tray, there is a rectangle cutout that will fit 3 servos side by side. The middle...

Got the engine mounted (pics in the same gallery in link above).

The engine mounts that came with the kit are actually a little nicer than the dubro or Sullivan ones you get at the LHS. Go...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Lower wing measures 57.5" (give or take an 8th), upper wing measure over 60" edge to edge. This should qualify as you can add a dashboard and pilot pretty easily as well.

That said, as it's...

RE: Nitroplanes Pitts Special 120 aka Pitts M-12-120

Yes and actually that whole area is open when the canopy setup is removed (which is held in by pegs and two screws into blind nuts).

I was able to jockey the 4 cell 3850 extreme back and the 5...
