RE: Figuring neutral point on biplane

Software that supposedly computes a neutral point based on only areas and distances is NOT reliable and should not be used for that purpose. You need aspect ratios, sweep angles, downwash angles,...

RE: Biplane Wing Incidence

When the wings are staggered, the forward wing will stall first. In this case, the top wing is set negative to the bottom wing to make them stall evenly (more aggressive). Having the forward wing...

RE: WING LOADING APPROXIMATIONS

Trainers are usually < 20
Sport is usually 20-30

Scale depends on the airplane and the scale. But ultimately, the size of your field will determine how much real estate you have to land on...

RE: Flawless maiden

Try a 14 x 10 APC. My TF Corsair went ~120 MPH with that prop on an OS 120 FS. Mind you, it's a bit smaller than the KMP, but 7 pitch would definitely seem to be the speed problem.

water in fuel

Has anyone ever tried putting the fuel in the freezer to remove water? Would this work? Methanol freezes at something like -97C and nitromethane at -29C. Would such a process cause any water to...

RE: top flite fw190 dora

The flaps will make a far bigger difference in your landing speed than will the weight of 2 servos. Seriously, putting flaps down will be like dumping 2 pounds!

RE: Trimming For Landing

I have attempted to teach this method to new pilots with mixed results. On one hand, it does give much better control over airspeed and more solid, consistent approaches. On the other hand, to go...

RE: Can´t get the static margin right

As near as I can figure, at a slow flying speed of 30 MPH, you'll be getting near 55 lbs of thrust. With 15 deg AoA, that's about 5800 oz-in of nose up torque, worth about 0.4 lift coefficient on...

RE: Can´t get the static margin right

Your AC and CG calcs are correct, but DO NOT trust that neutral point. It is based only on areas and distances. There are several factors that will move it forward.

1. The stab is operating...

RE: Pitch up with new prop!

I believe those 16 x 4 props have wide blades? (heavier?)

Put the two props on one of those kitchen scales. A few ounzes in weight difference acting several inches from the CG could make the...

RE: Help on wing design

I would say that's a very dangerous combination. You have a wing that is tapered approximately 50% and your tip airfoil will definitely not have the same maximum lift as the 44xx series, which will...

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9

Nice,

At 1/6 scale, the main wheels should be at least 5.5" (34" on real bird)

Scale control throws are:

Ailerons: 16 up , 12 down (80% dual rate should give scale roll rate)

RE: "6-10" PITCH PROPELLERS

Zinger claims that the "variable" pitch is to counter the flex. In my experience, they are superior performing props. In two aircraft where power was marginal, these propellers made a noticeable...

RE: airfoil max thickness position

It is angle of attack that stalls, not airspeed. You have too much elevator throw for the CG. The further back the CG is, the less movement you will need. If it's flyable as is, I would suggest...

RE: Questions about wing loading and CG

The aerodynamic center would be 25% of the chord located 1/3 the semi-span toward the tip. The CG should be slightly ahead of that point for positive stability.

RE: Tip stalls..... any fixes?

do not induce too much elevator at ANY speed. Make sure the CG is CORRECT. Even if it's specified at some point behind 25% MAC, I would still start at 25%.

RE: Help with props?

thats a pretty significant drop in diameter! You'll need close to 12 pitch to keep the rpm down. Another option would be to go to 3 blades. I'm thinking a Graupner 11 x 7 3-blade might be your...

RE: T F CORSAIR THROWS

Throws on the real plane are (degrees):

Ailerons: 19 up, 14 down
Elevator: 20 up, 16 down
Rudder: 25 left and right
Flaps: 50

If the plane is balanced at 25% MAC, those should...

RE: Airfoils

The chord x span = area
The greater the chord for a given thickness, the greater the frontal area (and wing area)

I don't think your question is specific to airfoils, but to the whole wing?
