RE: Cox Tee Dee .49 Diesel

So, it looks like you are not using a contra piston. Just a couple of aluminum discs pinched under the head?

It seems too simple. Great idea!

RE: Substitute for Ether

I'm still following this most-amazing-of-threads with great interest. Did anyone ever figure out what was in Mercury No. 9 fuel-- a fuel once available in the UK? Bowden mentions it in his 1940's...

RE: Skaliwag's Pee Wee backplate

Ahhh, my favorite: the Pee Wee. This is great news about the backplates. There's a chance for more experimentation. I always thought there was a good combination of fuel, prop, head gaskets that...

RE: Substitute for Ether

Reg,

I'm not sure what is meant by gelatine/glycerine/glycerol. On this side of the pond gelatin is a powder that, well, is boiled/cooled and makes for a tasty, wobbly, colorful dessert, JELLO....

RE: Substitute for Ether

SCG,

So, is that the purpose of the boiling with detergent? (To add triglycerides and modify the lubricant oil). But then how could a veggie oil be modified to use as a fuel? It's a little...

RE: Substitute for Ether

Great to see so many doing this research. There's something I don't understand, though. How can vegtable oil sometimes be used as a lubricant and then sometimes as the combustive fuel? Andy used...

What's in Davis Diesel Fuel?

I just checked the Davis Diesel Development site, but I could find no details on content. He offers 3 different fuels. Anyone have any idea what's in them?

Thanks

RE: Mills .045 flooding

I had a good time thime this afternoon. I've was able to warm-start the Mills with a single flip about 6 times. Here's my trick: a single drop of exhaust prime on the side of the piston, rotate...

RE: Mills .045 flooding

About how long does it take to break-in an Aurora Mills? Once setting compression, I'm not able to lean the needle out very much without sagging and overheating. I probably have 20 minutes of bench...

RE: Mills .045 flooding

OK, the compression setting stayed put this afternoon. I got much better at starting, too. As mentioned above, after flooding you have to reduce compression by about 1/4-1/2 compression screw...

RE: Mills .045 flooding

Thanks for the help. I had a much easier time today (2nd day) with the Mills. Maybe about 30 flips of the prop for an initial start. Later starts took about 5 flips. I flooded the engine twice,...

Mills .045 flooding

I just got my first diesel engine-- an Aurora Mills .045 from Ed Carlson. Using Davis Diesel fuel and a Cox 8X4, I was able to find the right compression after about 45 min of constant prop...

RE: Substitute for Ether

Mercury No. 6 mystery. I have a reprint of Bowden's "Diesel Model Engines" (1951) where he mentions a fuel called Mercury No. 6. (on page 98) It was a NON-ETHER fuel composed of 6 components that,...

Andy,

This has got to be one of the best threads ever on RCU. Thanks a lot for letting us see the entire R&D process as you tackle this problem. I don't run diesels, yet-- but I will. This...

RE: Substitute for Ether

Andy,

I wonder if they'll make the engines still?

How sad.

What brands of starter fluid work in diesel fuel?

Besides John Deere, what brands of starter fluid work in diesel fuel? Are there any brands that can be found at a Target or Wal-Mart? What specific brands have worked for you?

Thanks
