I use "pinned" hinges as well since they put less stress on the servos and allow more freedom of movement.

I put a hole in my alieron too.

I just used some ultracoat over it on a lower heat setting as to not melt the plastic and it worked just fine.
Later on I applied more heat to it with the iron...

Like others have posted, the key is to keep your engines rpm as close as possible, ESPECIALLY with a P-38....
