I ended up just making sure when I peeled the backing off the covering i tried to keep it somewhat stretched out so the ends could not touch. It got a little tricky with larger pieces but I got it...

that would be great if klasskote offered the paint in the US. Klasskote seems like the ticket but would be expensive to buy it from the UK. Hopefully it shows up here.

I picked up the 10" craftsman and I like it a lot. The 9" craftsman is a pos compared to the 10". Well worth the extra bucks!

I also came across mention of springs being added to the cylinders to help the gear come down, but to me there is not enough clearance inside to add a spring and still have the cylinder...

I measured up the shaft and the recess the shim has to fit into. Looks like this will be the ticket:
