I always use Eneloops. You can get them at Costco. They are rechargeable and last a long time. They also discharge at a lot slower rate than most others while not in use.

For around $300 you could get a Tamron 28-75 2.8. It's a good range and at 2.8 it will be good for dim indoor shots. I used that lens as a starter and it worked great for general stuff and pics of...
