Great reply, thanks. It reminded me a bit of my mother-in-laws recipe's; a pinch of this and a dash of that. I will probably do the cockpit detail, but not just yet. I want to fly her first.

Thank...

KD,

What stain and color did you use. It looks great. Did you use the same for the struts? Also, where did you get the leather strip?

My build was on hold for several months. Graduations, weddings; stuff. I re-started earlier this month. The actual build part is complete, I'm now in the process of assembly. I had all kinds of fun...

Thanks for the response Chevelle, but I was describing the the Cabane Struts, not the landing gear.

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

Well, I had to see what this bird was going to look like, so I slid the wheels and the cowl on after attaching the wings. Still a lot of work to do, but we're gettin' there.<div></div><div>One...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

Les, I threw away my old soldering gun and bought the Weller from Home Depot over the weekend. It worked well. Now on to the next step.

I may actually finish this plane sometime this year ;&gt;)

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

Thanks for the input Zor. I've been doing some research into soldering guns, and now think my gun needs a new tip. The problem is, my gun was purchased several decades ago at Montomery Wards. This...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

I must be a complete dummy regarding soldering. I was able to solder the landing gear and the cabane struts fairly well. However, the clips that get soldered to the cabane ends are a different matter...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

Thanks for the advice. Page six is where I found the series of posts related to soldering. I also have been reviewing an article by the late Mike Buzzeo on soldering. Nothing like too much...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

I am just about to the point of soldering cabane struts etc. As I work on the fuse I've been trying to visualize throttle linkage. servo placement, and choke. I like the idea of the cockpit area....

Congrats. Oh to be able to fly in such an open area. Your plane looks great. I still have several months of 'stuff' to complete before I take her to the field.

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

Perhaps my 'kill switch' comment was not accurate enough. I use 'throttle kill' on my radio to close the carb from a button on my radio. Never had a problem doing it this way.<div>...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

Kevin,

I have two gas engines. A Zenoah G-20, and a CRRC 26. On both I've removed the idle set screw and disconnected the spring. No issues. I use the kill switch on my radio to shut down the...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

As I was getting ready to install the basswood wing mount I noticed that it didn't fit. It was too short by a bit over an 1/8 inch. I contacted Balsa USA and explained to them my issue, and they are...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

I'm now in the process of building the fuse, and at the point of installing the wing bolts. I'm real nervous about the way the manual suggests doing this. I'd prefer to use blind nuts rather than...

RE: Noob to War Plane

If you really want to learn to fly with a gas trainer, try looking at Maxford. They have a plane that uses a CRRC 26cc engine. It is the 'Mentor'. I bought one in 2011 and have flown it many times. I...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

Thanks, I did notice the different sized ribs and the cabaine braces. I'm letting things cure right now, and getting ready to marry the right wing with the center section. I did the left...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

Update;  I've built the stab, and the upper right wing. So far no surprises. My plans are equal for the upper wing. No difference in length as mentioned earlier in the thread. A lot of detail in this...

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build

Is that a cowl from Balsa USA, or did you make it yourself? The plane looks great. I think I ordered the same colors for the covering. I ordered olive drab and linen something or other...
