I got some 5/32 music wire from the lhs and used the stock gear as a pattern and using a vise made some just like the stock gear just taller. It's easy to do and you get the clearance you want.

I have always used the them flange up and never had any problems, never had one come loose or fail due to using the flange up. IMHO don't worry about and fly. Next time you can do it right.
