You always have to; otherwise how is the ESC supposed to know what the trx. is trying to tell it to do?

Look up the manual for the ESC online, I'm sure it's available in...

You only need "2 slot wheels" - and any of the ones that fit any of the early RC10T1, or RC10T2 or T3 should fit your truck.
