Clark Y aerofoil

I don't think it's the Clark Y... the Lady foil is much flatter on the bottom and, I think, is proportionally thinner.

My first crash

So I was flying the Sophisticated Lady on what I reckoned was a half-charged battery. (You can see where this is heading already, can't you?)

After about 10 minutes, it was flying along the slope...

Solarfilm wing covering: my dubious, bodged experiences

My Sophisticated Lady (seen in my avatar) is covered in Solarfilm (probably similar to Ultracote). I received the glider fully built and covered, and the covering was quite wrinkly in places.

How do you calculate the CG of an aircraft?

The CG is usually near the centre of lift, which is usually about 1/3 of the way backf rom the leading edge of the (unswept) wing.

That's what it's like on my plane, at least!

V tail vers T tail

In a full-scale ship, if you apply rudder only the plane will yaw to one side, but will just about continue travelling in the same direction, before pitching down and rolling in the direction of the...

Hello, all.. and Sophisticated Lady

I'm from Dunstable, which is near Luton, which is north-northwest of London.

There's a slope called the Dunstable Downs nearby, which RCers aren't allowed to fly at because of the paragliders,...

People and their dogs!

I wish the law gave that amount of justice in England. Anyone gets away with anything.

People and their dogs!

I was about to scream "PUT THAT BLOODY THING ON A LEASH", but I was too busy seeing if the glider was damaged.

It'll work without repairs alright, there's nothing to worry about there, but if it...

People and their dogs!

Was up the hill yesterday with the Sophisticated Lady, had a good while's soaring, including a thermal that took me higher than ever.

After I'd finished, I had the glider on the ground so I could...

Hello, all.. and Sophisticated Lady

The bands are indeed very thick and very tight!
I would go into the model shop to look for some more, but the owners have serious personality issues...

Kept her up for about 10 minutes at one...

Hello, all.. and Sophisticated Lady

Flew the Sophisticated Lady yesterday, with a 5 mph SE wind blowing on a S-facing slope.

Just put it together and swapped the receiver from the Zagi, and with no modification it soared away from...

Hello, all.. and Sophisticated Lady

Don't worry, Robert, my mate is a competent winch driver but I wouldn't trust him with anything that's remotely destructible, let alone this. Besides, I haven't installed the towhook!

It'll just...

Hello, all.. and Sophisticated Lady

Beulzabob, the previous owner had only tested it in his back garden, apparently. Maybe he was in the middle of setting up the throws.

Flyboy, I've moved the pushrod out on the servo, but if I move...

Hello, all.. and Sophisticated Lady

The guy who built it has sadly passed on, which is why I have the glider inthe first place, so I can't really ask him about its construction! The trailing edge looks like it has some carpet tape...

Full-Scale Soaring

I'm a Cadet at my local gliding club (London Gliding Club). That basically means I get half-price launches and free air-time.

Haha, that reminds me of when me and my mate tried hand towing my Zagi on the top of a hill in a 20kt wind...

It went up once. Then, the string was swiftly taken from my friend's hand by the...
