I came across this old thread while I was looking for an EDF to replace an RK-049. I actually have a Midwest A4 and an RK-049 that I bought way back when it was new. Luckily I never finished the...

Did you ever get this plane to fly? I'm working on an electric version built from (Flyline) plans (no kit). The landing gear on a GLT is tricky on a model this size. It helps that it uses big wheels...

Norm drew two plans for the Great Lakes: a 1/4-scale (80" span) and a 1/5-scale (64" span). The big one used a "Quadra" which was a very popular gas engine at the time he did the design. The smaller...

RE: Measure the length of a pattern plane

Legend has it that the "F3A" spinner profile (shorter than a "standard" spinner profile) came about as a result of the size rule: it allows more "airplane" to fit within the length constraint. :)

RE: OS 1.60 for a 2x2

Yeah I almost forgot about that. I use the Boca S.S. bearings that have seals on BOTH sides. My thinking was to try to keep the fuel away from the bearings as much as possible for as long as...

RE: OS 1.60 for a 2x2

I'm still running OS160's on all of my glow Pattern planes (yes I'm migrating to electric now). Once you get the pipe + header to work correctly (I had problems breaking headers until I figured out...

RE: OS 33GT Gasoline Engine for Pattern

Matt,
Sounds like the OS needs a compression release like we sometimes use on long-stroke Harleys. Is there any place on the head where you can machine a spot to put one in? You'd have to make a...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

How does the contra-rotating setup compare noise-wise to a conventional single prop? Has anyone made a side by side comparison with a reasonably accurate sound meter? Just curious as I've never seen...

RE: How weight affects YOUR participation at NATS

Minimum (400 Kgs). I know where you're going with this but please, oh please don't say it here! LOL

RE: How weight affects YOUR participation at NATS

Can you imagine what would happen if they got rid of all the "restrictive" rules in 'Formula Ford'? Let's see... uh, Formula 1? Isn't that more expensive?

Ed,
You've been here (Connecticut) so you know the answer to THAT question! LOL

RE: How the

Pattern is similar to any competitive Sport (can I use that term?): some people think that they can simply "buy" their way to the top while in fact there's much more to it than that. The people who...

RE: How weight affects YOUR participation at NATS

Dave,
Sorry I guess you're kinda new at this. We've been through the weight rule discussion time again and I've realized that we all should just agree to disagree. That's why I just try to lighten...

RE: How weight affects YOUR participation at NATS

Ed,
You probably don't remember because you emptied all those beer bottles before you stuffed 'em in the fuselage! I took those bottles out and then I installed an OS160 with an aluminum pipe and...

RE: Could our hobby be considered a Sport?

"Bull-fighting, Sky-Diving and Auto-Racing are sports, everything else is just a game!" LOL I can't remember who said that but it's always fun to say it to someone at a Sports bar.

RE: How weight affects YOUR participation at NATS

Ed,
Very good analysis but according to my buddy Brett who flies warbirds - you're completely wrong. EVERYONE knows a heavier plane is stronger AND flies better! That's why you need to "beef" up...

RE: Future of AMA Advanced Class

Joe,
As you know I missed the entire past season because I was busy getting things back in order after losing Kathy (my house needed a LOT of work). That being said I WILL be back in 2012!

I...

RE: Throttle curve

Don't forget that the throttle barrel has an arm on it just like the servo. To get the type of "linear" response that you're talking about (one degree of servo movement = one degree of throttle...

RE: A different approach

Nice work! If you're lookng to save some weight definitely (as a few people have suggested already) use a smaller Rx pack. What are you using for bracing on the tail? I hope it's not music wire....

RE: SAP 180 (Syssa Performance)

That stuff might help but if you really want mid-range grunt you should see if Todd would be interested in making the long-stroke "Pattern" version that he and I talked about (briefly) when...

RE: =NOT= The 800-pound gorilla sitting in the corner

Wind Junkie,
Yeah - what Ed and Arch said is right on. When the weather warms up, get away from that computer and come fly with us! You don't need a 2-meter Pattern plane to fly in a contest...

RE: =NOT= The 800-pound gorilla sitting in the corner

Wind Junkie,
I'm sorry that you have a bad impression of Pattern flyers after reading that "other" thread. Please hold on to your original image of us as that is much more accurate. If you really...

RE: Why do I stink at rolls? =)

Joe,
You're overthinking the problem grasshopper. Unless the plane is VERY nose heavy you should be able to pull off the 2 rolls in the Intermediate schedule without rudder. Don't get me wrong,...

RE: First Pattern Contest

This is true but it's better to take a small hit for flying around the corner as opposed to completely flopping it (big 0). :)

It's like everything else, once you learn to set the plane up for...
