Just a quick comment.....most(if not all) reed blocks I've seen have some sort of backer plate to keep the reeds from flexing too far,so they don't create the kind of cracks you're describing....did...

If your starter cone is of a standard type, you should be able to pull the rubber center piece out of it, turn it around, & put it back in. This leaves a flat surface with a hole in the middle of it...
