I just scuffed them up with 0000 steel wool and sprayed very light coats of lustercoat. I think very light dusting coats is the key.

Thanks, my first thought was to check the o-ring on the needle but it does not appear to have the typical o-ring set-up. Are there any common places to check for air leakage on the intake side?
