Rebel, I forgot all about braking. How about the idea of the whole unit twisting to steer?
It would have to look a lot better than the 'extra bit' that is way off scale.

Warbirdrcer, just one little note before you go too far and start cutting anything to get clearance for your gear, make sure you have the scissors of the gear legs pointing forwards. In your picture...
