RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

You know you can order the Sea Fury from YT International, the designer of the Spit, 109, and Hurricane, in the UK: http://www.ytinternational.co.uk/index.htm

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

You can order one from: http://www.kmp.ca/classics.htm

I don't know if the new shipment has arrived in the states yet, so it's best to give KMP a call. The pictures they have on their website...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

The cowl already looks way off. The bottom of the cowl should taper less than the top of the cowl. The cowl on the smaller Dymond F8F looks much more scale. Somebody needs to do some serious...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

I would get the new YT International / KMP Sea Fury, with scale split flaps and improved retracts:

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

As said above, the full size Rare Bear doesn't have flaps.

RCS 140 or Roto 25 would be more suitable.

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

Believe me, you do not want to load up the engine too much. A .91 four stroke can't even swing a 14x7 3-blade. How do you expect a .91 two stroke to be able to swing it? You can always try it to...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

OS .91FX is too light, and MA 14x7 3-blade is too big of a prop for that engine. BTW, 14x7 3-blade is more suitable for a 120 four stroke.

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

Looking good. How come you decided to have the main wheels face in instead of out like the full size? Is the wing too thin to house the offset fork on the strut?

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

The YS 110 has a pretty good fuel consumption rate. I can usually get 12 minutes out of a 14 oz tank at mostly full throttle. The YS 140 drinks between 2 and 2.5 oz per minute. I'm not sure about...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

I have one on order. Let's hope it turns out decent.

Who ever comes out with a .60 size or larger F8F Bearcat ARF would make a fortune. Come on people. We don't need another Mudstain or...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

I just ran across a Navy Bearcat ARF. It's lightly smaller than TT Rare Bear, but it might be worth looking into: http://www.rc-dymond.com/order_newitems.htm

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

I tried those inline air restrictors before, and they didn't slow down the retracts as much as a variable air valve. Give the air restrictors a shot first since they are much cheaper.

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

My pleasure. I only fly warbirds, and all of my warbirds have retracts. Thus, retracts are no mystery to me whether they are mechanical or pneumatic.

On another note, if you want your air...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

You could go with the 530RS or the 531RS. However, on these, the air cylinders face outward toward the wingtips. You would need to make a cut-out on the rib just outboard of the retract mount area...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

Thanks Kerry. So the Sullivan 3-1/2" wheels fit fine inside the wheel wells? I have a pair of Sullivan 3-1/2" Skylites with aluminum hubs that I could use.

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

How big are the supplied main wheels? I hope they are around 4" in diameter.

I have a feeling this plane will need to land pretty fast.

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

The retract angle is the angle of the strut from being fully retracted to being fully extended. If you want the struts perpendicular to the ground, then use 85 deg since the wing has some dihedral. ...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

Go with Robart 7/16" diameter oleo struts. I don't know how big the main wheels are, but Tower only sells offset struts for 3-3/4" - 4" wheels:

* Robart 663L Left Strut
* Robart 663R Right...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

Attached is a picture showing the front view of Rare Bear sitting on the ground. The struts do splay out a little toward the ground, so you could go with 90-degree retracts.

Tower does carry...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

Any standard size 85-degree pneumatic retracts will work. I would not go with the Robart 605's because their plastic housings tend to crack under a semi-hard landing. Go with all metal, RoboStrut...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

This is similar to Robart newer 500 "RS" series. However, Robart "RS" series can take 7/16" diameter oleo struts whereas Spring Air can only take 3/8" oleo struts.

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

A YS 110 would be plenty and fast for this plane. Plus, it's the same physical size as your YS 91AC, so it would fit nicely inside the cowl. If you are looking for speed and awesome sounds, then...

RE: ThunderTiger Rare Bear

It is simple and straight forward to install RoboStruts onto the stock mechanical retracts should you decide to go that route. I would go with pneumatic retracts.
