RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

Oh good, you're going to reopen this can of worms! Here's the first of many widely varying opinions: Mine has an OS FS 1.20 w/pump and it's more than enough engine for sport flying and scale...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

I fly mine with an OS 1.20 and it's plenty of power. I'm convinced a good .91 four stroke would fly it well. Your Saito 1.00 should be sufficient. Personally I'd prefer a bit more power in reserve...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

Hey Ben,

Thanks for the info on Solo props! I hadn't heard that they were back. That's great news. I'm going to have to get one now :D

Post some pics of your build. You'll like the...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

Hi Bobby,

You're going to love how this airplane flies. It's one of the best bipes I've ever owned. I liked it so much I bought a second one before they were discontinued. lashbuick is right...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

The G38 is a wonderful engine. Easy to start and maintain and no fiddling with mixture. All of mine have been basically "set and forget". They just run and run. Best of all, you can fly all day...

Nice work loukos! Good luck with the maiden. These are great flyers.

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

I run an OS 1.20 four stroke on mine as well. I use a two blade 16x8 or a three blade 15x7. Both props work well with this engine.

Hoo boy, you're gonna regret listing your email on an open forum like this. The spammers have web crawlers hunting email addy's 24/7. You'll be up to your armpits in spam in a few days :)

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

I agree. This is one of the best flying planes I've ever had. I'm glad I bought an extra one when I did. :)

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

LOL I wasn't gonna say nothin :D The OS 1.60 twin is a sweet engine. Even better on ignition, you lucky dawg. You'll have plenty of power to do just about anything you want plus the Gemini loves...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

If you don't have any luck on the secondary market, you might try calling Kelvin at Keleo Creations and ask if he'll make you one. He recently did an exhaust header for one of my Enya v-twins that...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

It's been done and is covered on this thread. Read back, you'll find it (along with lots of other useful info).

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

You're going to love the sound of your four stroke with the Keleo exhaust. I have mine on an OS 120 III w/pump and you'd swear it sounds like a multi-cylinder engine.

Incidentally I talked to...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

I would never, EVER share the Rx battery with the glow driver; not on any plane. I wouldn't share the Rx battery with anything. The weight penalty for a dedicated battery pack for the glow is...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

I haven't tried differential. I mix 40% rudder in with ailerons and it turns beautifully. I don't think you'd get a similar result with aileron differential. It would probably still need some...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

The plane will fly very well and in a scale manner with a .90 four stroke. I found a 1.20 four stroke to be ideal, plenty of extra power if needed and still pretty reasonable fuel economy. I'm sure...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

It's probably about right if you're converting it to an all-out 3-D machine. For scale or sport flying, it's much more than you will need. Plan on adding some ballast to the tail to get it to...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

You can pick up a good OS (or Saito, or Magnum) 1.20 for a LOT less than $700 and it will do everything you could ever want to do with this airplane. It's more than enough power and the airplane...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

It'll fly on a .90 four stroke. Saito 1.80 will be more than enough even at your altitude.

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

I bought some too, but before putting them on I spent a couple hours with glass cloth and resin reinforcing the bottoms and the mounting holes. It's definitely worth the time spent and the weight...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

It wouldn't fit well upright. You'd have most of the cylinders protruding out of the top of the cowl. My inverted OS 1.20 is fully enclosed except for the rocker arm cover and just a couple of the...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

I didn't add any ballast. OS 1.20 FS III Pumped with Keleo scale exhaust. Battery mounted on the engine box. CG wound up at the recommended location. The Keleo exhaust makes it sound like a scale...

RE: P-6E Curtis hawk (build thread)

I'm not saying the 1.80 is a bad idea. Sure, you can always throttle back. Heck, as long as you're at it and money is not object, why not go with the Saito 2.00 v-twin?

As for smoke... the...
