Use a plastic body trowel to basically scrape the epoxy across the surface to leave a very thin coat.

It all depends on how heavy the cloth is to begin with and how you apply the epoxy. Epoxy is heavy in itself, so light, skim coats are a must.

Kevlar is the stuff bulletproof vests and flak jackets are made of. Kevlar is slightly less stiff than fiberglass, but much tougher and lighter weight.

Are the sides of the boat at an angle? How long is the boat, how wide? Got pictures?

I'm not sure how poly resin will react to depron, but epoxy and fiberglass cloth might do the trick for you....
