Since that last post I've had a couple of them. Both the ports in back have check balls, the one with the screen is indeed the intake as you guessed.

An aquarium valve might work fine,...

The dual plug was a device to effectively retard the ignition at low speed, by using a normal four stroke plug (OS type "F") in the rear hole, and a cold two stroke plug in the front....
