RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Yes, that was probably set for Ultracote, however, if I suddenly found myself using MK, I wouldn't change anything. I would start with the iron as is,, and increase or decrease the heat as needed.

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Ok, I must confess... I have an iron thermometer (which I showed in the video) but frankly, I never use it. I just go by the results I'm getting.

I start with the dial on my iron at about a 10...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Alas, I do not. But I do have a Goldberg Cub on the bench which I am seriously considering using Solartex on just so I can do a video series - of course, WHEN I ever get around to finishing it is...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Straight acetone will work on MonoKote's adhesive, but not on Ultracote's adhesive. however, acetone is very aggressive, so you might want to dilute it with alcohol. I can only guess on the ratio,...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

I explained somewhere in the videos that the wing was sitting on a foam pad (About 2" thick) and I had some books on the other end to weight it down. Having a second set of hands is even better, but...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Small world, I used to live in Chula Vista in the late 70's when I was in the Navy. I left Newberg in 94. I used to work at Stewart Airport as a CAD/CAM machinist on those C-5 cargo planes

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Well, that depends on the decal. I would try it with low heat and a sock on the iron

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

That's very unusual... It's not unusual for the covering to wrinkle, but it's unusual that it won't tighten up again.

About all I can say is to try heating it again, maybe see if you can get the...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Clean it GOOD with alcohol and a clean rag or paper towel. You may need to do it two or three times (Using a clean paper rag each time) to get it good and clean.

Clean the exposed area of the...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Before ripping it off and burning it in effigy try this:

Get the wrinkles out with a heat gun, THEN iron it down again. Keep the iron pretty hot and make sure you get it well stuck to whatever...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

The sequal is in the works.

Last June Ken Isaac (RCKen) and I got together and video taped an entire trainer build, from opeing the box, to building the plane, to covering, to starting and...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

One of the biggest things to keep in mind is that covering is a long, slow process. Don't rush it.

Avoid thinking things like, "I'm going to cover my wing tonight" - Instead go into it with the...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Whatever they print it on, you'll want to fuel proof it with a clear polyurethane

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Alex, One of the nice things about Ultracote is that if you really screw it up, you can just heat it again and remove it, then start all over again.

Good Luck!

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Well, that's a tough call to make depending on how much overlaping you plan to do. If I were covering it, I wouls plan on 1 roll of white and 2 each of red and blue

Something to consider......

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

Switching to Ultracote was going to be my first suggestion.

I like both coverings for different reasons, but for just plain "User Friendliness", Ultracote is the winner, hands down.

Here is...

RE: New Covering Videos!!!

I used to do the old "Silk & Dope" before iron-on covering, but I have only used a fabric covering once and that was 21st century fabric.

I hear very good things about the "Tex" fabrics. but...
