RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

And props to you for providing the in-depth profile of the sucker.

I figure to respond with somewhat of a softball.

The Dolphin was tasked mostly with high altitude jobs.

Sopwith Dolphin

Top wing was about neck height to the pilot, so visibility above was unbeatable.

It was powered by the engine used in the SE5a, yet employed better streamlining than that...

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

Splitting hairs about the B-17? They weren't planned to be attack aircraft, and I don't think they ever used them as such because they would have sucked at that. They were envisioned to be defense...

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

Did you know that there were operational drop tanks constructed of cardboard? and bamboo?

I've read about them in numerous books, but never saw pictures or blueprints.

Pretty amazing...

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

I'm re-reading Flying Tigers, Claire Chennault and His American Volunteers, 1941-1942, by Daniel Ford and it mentions the CW-21, Demon a number ot times.

It says that Chennault bought 3 of them...

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

OK, I believe I've recognized two winners. And by doing so, have sort of screwed up the orderly process here. It would make the thread a mess to turn it into a chain letter thing that had...

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

Spot on.

The Mitsubishi Ki-46-III-Kai (Dinah) was sort of WWII's "crossover vehicle" of the airwar. It was a twin engine that started life as a reconnaissance but got a 37mm pointing up and two...

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

Yup, according to most of my books, that was the fastest fighter they used in any numbers. That book puts it's speed at 388mph@~20,000'. The book also has the P-38 at 405mph so The Frank was only...

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

I'd bet the Myrt was probably as fast operationally as the two I have in mind, but my books show it was about 15mph slower than the "bomber" and 10mph slower than the fighter.

The Myrt (Saiun or...
