RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Curiouser and curiouser. Looking at the 'light' cowl, it almost has the look of 'engine turning' on the surface. Could it have been plain ally? In certain light conditions that could look quite...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Yes Jim, thats the one. There are lots (Lots? Some) of others too of other SSW's, 90% showing light, or at least plain, coloured wheels. I wonder if it goes with those non-lozenge undersurface...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Yes, very nice indeed. They are fun little things, aren't they? I have found a photo of yours, a line up with a D7 and a couple of other SSW's. You won't like it though...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

To be fair the ailerons on my model are not good, 'adequate' would be my feeling. 360 deg takes around 4 seconds which for a model is pretty slow, but the rate of turn, once bank angle is...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Good to see some more progress Jim, I thought it'd be flying by now...Just to stir you along, our ANZAC day today (Vets commemoration) so I had just the airplane for it.

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Well thank you! It was really nice air...We are all waiting to see yours doing the thing, mine is a poor effort compared to yours. It will be interesting to see what visible difference the two sets...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Next? Well, I gotta finish the dummy engine, spinner and pilot for this, then there's two Simla and a 1/6 Ju88G to finish...Then I might start to think about what's next...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Took a bit longer to find these than anticipated, but some flying shots...taken over the Easter weekend.

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Someone was pointing a long circular black thing at it, so when I find out who it was and where the images he took are, I might be able to post some in flight stuff. I don't have any of my own, so it...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Just back, lovely day and 4 more flights. The thing is a great fun model, aerobatic enough to do a sort of 'airshow display' and with enough foibles to keep the interest up. My landings are getting...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

I forgot the best 'source data' on this forum...Alan Flowers museum DIII, built right here. If you have a look at his rib and perimeter tapes you will get the idea. I have a feeling that SSW would...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Some scans that show elevator and aileron tapes. The centre section one shows the x-sect of the upper wing cutout and the hole on the windscreen, and the reason for it. The D111 with plain fabric...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Yep, I will try to get a good clear scan of the photos I have, though my docs are limited. I think you can see the elevator rib tapes on the third photo you just uploaded. Seems strange, does it not,...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Thats funny, all the photos I have that are clear enough show tapes on the the ailerons and elevator, and reinforcing tapes around the perimeters of all the surfaces...the trailing edges have the...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Jim, you gonna finish all the rib and perimeter tapes? What you got looks superb and puts mine way in the shade, but it needs the rest to complete it...for the full effect...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Oh, yes, by the way, can anyone confirm a suspition that the SH engine had a standard throttle, rather than the 'blip' thing? Just so I know weather to use a smooth throttle or blip the thing...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Looks nice Jim, won't be long now, will it? I have some more time on mine, balances at 30% of the upper wing chord, stall is straight, nose well up, no wing drop and I haven't tried a spin yet....

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Well it wasn't really clement, 15 kn or so across the runway, but it took off across anyway, and went up like a lift. Needed just a bit of down trim at 1/2 throttle for 'S&L' and turns with alacrity,...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

So, Jim, how's the Schuckert coming along? This 'un's just waiting clement weather...No dummy engine or spinner as yet, 1/4 scale, 12.5 lb, ST G2023. Balances about right 'as is'. Looking forward to...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Timoth4, the photos I have of 'full size' lozenge coloured wings shows that they are definitly translucent. They seem to 'glow' from underneath in sunlight, definitly not opaque. Just FWIW.

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Yes, weathered ally does look white under certain light conditions. If you intend competition, then match your colour documentation, unless your colour documentation photo shows otherwise. I have...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Thanks, it was your thread that got me going on the project, that and the slow progress on the 88. The colours are from an old 'Profile Publication' and there is still a white 'V' to be painted on...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Looking at the real thing, the prop and spinner will take any noseover first, even if you have just the propshaft sticking out the front, cause when the wheels are fitted it just about stands...

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale

Most kind Allan. We don't often find this sort of stuff way down this part of the world, and struggle, as you can see, to get good info on obscure types.
Evan.
