I'm not convinced biplanes are the preferred platform, but they're certainly a viable option. The big forward canopy airplanes if given enough vertical fin area are fine. One thing that should be...

Completely agree with this. Lowering the canalyzer would not have improved anything. Adding the stab fences is the easy change to increasing yaw stability as Tony mentioned.

People keep saying the...

Seba's airplane had an odd cavitation sound to it. Do all of the contras sound like this? I haven't heard one of Brenner's fly yet.

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

You don't need them if your airplane has enough vertical stab area. :)

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

The flare of the rudder actually enhances the effectiveness of the surface by helping to keep flow attached when deflected. It also creates a drag rise aft of the trailing edge of the rudder,...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Reminds me of a wood Miss Wind. I like it a LOT. Very nice looking design.

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

I doubt it Brenner. The location of the fences actually places them ahead of the center of pressure reducing yaw stability (and thereby increasing yaw maneuverability).

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

That's just because it's hard to get past how ugly the Gannet is in the 1st place. LOL.

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

I'm almost 100% certain the instability is caused by the CD removing the surface pre-load effect generated by spiral slipstream. The thickened trailing edge is reapplying that preload in a different...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

Keep in mind... Tony had told me he felt the Onas could use a bit more vertical fin area BEFORE he went to the contra-drive setup. It's likely the contra-drive only made the issue big enough that...

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes

When I talked to Tony a couple months ago he mentioned he felt the Onas needed a bit more vertical fin area, so I'm guessing this might be more of a 'while I'm making changes' sort of thing rather...

Tony, are you coming to Riverside in a couple weeks? I'd love to see it fly.
