RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

Thanks for the tip on the counter balances.

That 4D has been put through it's paces. Just look at the "wrinkles". Nothing a little heat from the iron won't cure.

BTW: If that's...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

Gary, I'm no motor expert and I don't know much about 4 cycles.

I'm running an OS46FX with an 11x4 Master Airscrew prop. I also have a Tower Muffler and I am using 15% fuel.

If the plane...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

Gary,

On glue smell.......
ProBond to me has what I call a light odor when applied, but it didn't appear too noticable as it set up.

3M77 has to be applied outside because it's in a spray...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

Thanks for the compliments.

If I didn't have anything else on my building board, it would probably have taken only about a week of workshop time in the evenings and maybe a Satruday to get...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

It's now time to fly this airplane and see if it truly lives up to it's name.

You need to know a couple of things to fly the 4D successfully.

1. Take off is at 1/2 throttle. You...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

One problem I had, was I made a mistake when I installed the control horn on the vertical stabalizer. I thought this would not be a problem, but I was wrong. This mistake weakened the coroplast so...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

As usual, mounting the motor to the plane is saved for last so you can set the CG. I've chosen a OS46FX with a Tower Muffler to power mine.

The kit also comes with some press on decals to...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

The motor mounts are installed using two 1/4 x 20 Nylon bolts. These are secured with a large washer and a nut. The wire landing gear is trapped between the motor plate and the large washer.

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

For some reason yet to be determined, I came up short on each of the upper and lower fusalage sections by a distance of exactly two flutes of coroplast. I don't think I cut them wrong, but maybe I...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

It's now time to add the upper and lower fusalage sections.

First install the fuel tank with zip strips. I put a piece of foam under mine for vibrations, but it may not have needed it.

I'm glad your finding it helpful GarySS

But, as the old TV comercials say......But What! There's More!

It's now time to hook up the control rods to the control horns on the...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

You should be able to get by with one roll provided there are no mistakes either in cutting or in applying the covering.

But, I would not cover the wing in one color. Use two at the very least....

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

I installed the fusalage "bat" to the wing per the instructions. The hardest part here is to make sure you get the fusalage section square with the wing before you lock it down.

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

To build the horizontal stabalizer control linkage will require most people to try something new. This part must be soldered together from three seperate pieces. And even though I've soldered...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

Once everything on the wing is dry it is time to cover the wing. The first thing you will need to do is to protect your servos and receiver from the 3M77 glue. I used masking tape to protect these...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

While the wing is drying I went to work on the tail.

Here the hoizontal stabs and the vertical stab has been added. It's a simple matter of pushing the CF rod hinges into place through the...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

One other general comment that I had forgotten to mention.

There are several plastic parts in the kit which need to be glued to the wing. The glue will stick to them better if you roughen up...

Let's pick up again where we left off................

I just noticed that I haven't said anything about "ProBond" yet. For those of you who haven't used this glue before, you will need to be...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

This shot shows the throttle servo in place on the top of the wing.

One word about the throttle servo.

You need to use a metal gear servo for the throttle. I did not originally use a...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

Installing the radio equipment is the next major step.

The instructions are a big help. They start by prepping the servos by removing the mounting tabs. Then the servos and radio gear...

The outer Nyrod tubes are installed in the next steps. The nyrod tubes which came in my kit were precut to length already. I just had to sort out which ones went where. Be sure to put the correct...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

The next section of the instructions involves lining up the "bat" with the wing. This is pretty straightforward and involves some cutting and notching of the "bat" to fit on the "key plate"...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

To pick up where I left off on Page 1, I had just cut out the upper and lower fusalage sections.

Next you will need to work on the wiffle bat fusalage section.

First, you will need to...

RE: Tuff Flight's 4D

I've seen alot of posts asking questions about the 4D, so I thought I would "revive" this thread and continue my build information and what I have learned by flying the 4D.
