If a wing of 3/8” thick solid balsa would not pass your test, the lighten wing will also fail.
However, I believe your solution is excellent and will work properly.

For getting a better idea...

Yes Mike, the vertical grain acts as a column between the two spars forming an I beam, resisting any buckling of the compressed spar that I mentioned before, besides any spanwise relative movement...

Mike,

Besides the good advices above, I would suggest making the spar continuous, and breaking the ribs. More than one spar (smaller each) would be better, since the wing is swept back.
