Sounds to me like you are having issues with setting the mesh, I wonder if you can't get a tight enough fit with the 54T spur? Maybe consider going with a larger pinion with the 62T spur instead?

The smaller the spur the more rotation and faster wear, same goes with running 3S which will also increase wear... if you do lots of hard acceleration and wheelies, then that will also increase...
