I don't cut them on the ST-RR. But here is a hint for everyone. On the bottom plastic spring retainer, cut the corner edge off. Just 45 it or file it down. This will keep it from tearing the boot!

The reason the spur is hanging out the bottom of the chassis is that he must not have put the spacer under the center diff mount. There are 3 sizes of spacers to put under the center diff mount...
