I bought mine through this Ebay listing. It was cheaper than any online stores I could find for me with shipping to Norway:

I flew the plane once today. The new retracts are so far great. :) I like that I can lower and retract them as oftern as I want. They have a dedicated BEC.

I decided to replace my old Robart 615 retracts with some electric ones. I chose E-flite 520 units, which are 95° retracts. They work well, but being electric I have to let them go the full cycle, so...

I had to do a couple more things. I added an antenna using a spring and some steel rudder wire, and made a carbon fiber pitot tube. The pitot tube is removeable to reduce the chance of hangar rash...

I added some basic stuff to liven up the bottom of the wing. Not for close scrutiny, but to look good in the air. :) There are nav lights (not functional) on the top of the wing as well.

I just finished repainting it. Turned out pretty good. I'm quite happy with it. The tiger can be improved slightly, but they never really look good, or right, on the full size either.

Still...

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

Heat will soften epoxy somewhat but it's not a good idea unless you can isolate the area. How big is the gap? Paint strippers can also dissolve epoxy if left on for a long time, as well as strong...

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

I used to fly with the CG at 88 mm with the heavy Soloprop. That flew very smoothly. Lately I've been flying with the CG at 95 mm which flies great but is a little more pitch sensitive.

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

Hehe. The P-40 is not for sale. :)

I have started drawing the constant speed system and ordering components for it. It'll be fun to test it. I think I will try installing Lado Tech retracts...

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

I've done a few more flights now with the DIY prop and it's still great. :) Here's a video from today. It's edited and short. The camera was zoomed out so it's best if you click "watch in high...

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

Not really. :) I think I want to do it in either a british scheme or the tiger scheme.

BTW, I had serious problems with the landing gear during the winter. It didn't operate properly in the...

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

Hmm. It's been a while.

I've flown several times with the home made propeller and even tried a different pitch. I have broke several of my props on bad landings because the larger diametre is...

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

It's a very nice flyer. Very smooth and a *****cat to land, at least with large flaps. :) Ground handling is easy as well.

Here's the completed prop. It weighs 126 g and is 21" in diametre....

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

Electric motors run a certain amount of rpm per V at full throttle. A higher load (bigger prop) brakes the motor and increases the current draw. A motor can only be braked so much before it's...

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

It would maybe need to be strengthened for high rpm and if you plan to start it with an electric starter on the spinner tip. I think it would work fine though. My spinners are incredibly lightweight....

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

I have started building the constant speed propeller. Here are a few pictures of the design process and milling work. I'm not happy with how those blade grips came out so I'm going to make new ones...

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

My prop is 20". I think the scale diameter for this plane would be ~21". I haven't tried a Graupner prop in over ten years but I hear they are good.

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

RE: CMP 73" P-40 kit bash

Oh well, so much for the P-40. I tried to fly from a very small runway today.

Nah, just kidding. It didn't go too well though. I accelerated down the runway and at the three quarter...
