RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Wow! I just measured my battery after yesterday...

I was wondering how well my 2s 1300mAh battery lasted, running the 2 winch servos. Anyway, after a solid hour of sailing yesterday, I just...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

I managed to take some video yesterday. I wasn't using the canting keel, because I was doing the video myself, so I was sailing one handed, and couldn't control the canting keel. The wind was so...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Perhaps. I will play around with this.

However, the stalling problem I mentioned has the main symptom of the boat blowing over. Drifting sideways in the water is not an issue, and it holds...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Well, I finally organised the official boat launch on Easter Saturday.

We went to the sea-side pool at Wynnum. With a good 15kt breeze, I was a bit worried about the boat. But in the end it...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Hey, my old rival Smoofty. I had some time off work today to get it all finished, and I'm pretty happy now. Whew, after 18 months, it's a releif to be done. I'll keep watching your thread - when...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Screenprinting of the new sail went very well. I spent a bit of time reinforcing the sail with white ripstop tape, and seam tape. I also got some sticky-back Dacron for the corners, and stuck short...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Just the sails to go! I've sourced some ripstop nylon (.75oz spinnaker cloth) in the right colours. It's not the perfect sail material, as it does have stretching issues, and the cloth is affected...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Here's the next exciting installment... :)

Despite the lack of updates for a while, work has continued on the boat. In fact the hull is pretty much complete. The spraying and polishing worked...

RE: AC 12 Team NewZealand

Hi Andrew, Good to see that you are still going. Looking good - it all starts to take shape when the paint goes on. I think I'm still ahead in our race, but it ain't over till it's done. :)

RE: Volvo 70 line drawings?

Good to see more nice work from you, although it's a pity to see the ABN boat disappear underneath the new colours. It was a great boat. I've got a couple of questions for you if you don't mind......

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

No photos today, just a quick update. I’ve been working on the gloss coat for the paint, and still having lots of trouble, but the problems seem to be resolved, and I can see the light at the end...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Hi, it’s me again. It’s stormy outside tonight, so I can’t do any spraying. Time to update my build-log.

I finally got my decals. Yay. I’ve put them on, which was a lot of fun, and...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

My mast is 8mm carbon fibre tube (I had one lying around). 6mm wide would be better, but I didn't have one, and ideally you'd add a second small tube behind to make a longer profile, and then smooth...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Work and holidays have both been busy, so the boat has slowed a little. For our 10th wedding anniversary, we spent a week a Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Just by accident, it was the...

RE: AC 12 Team NewZealand

Hey Smoofty, Good to hear that you are still on it. I'd hate to think I was winning our race by forfeit. :) Don't worry, I still have months to go on my boat, so no rush. Your's is looking nice...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

The painting is mostly done. Here’s what I learned about spray painting…

1) Shake the can. LOTS. If the paint is not mixed well, it won’t spray right.
2) Follow the instructions on...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

I’ve been spray-painting. Here’s some advice I’ve learned the hard way…

Always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS follow the instructions on spray paint cans EXACTLY. If it says shake for 2 minutes, then...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

The sail loft hasn’t bothered to send out the material samples they promised, so I’ll have to pay them a visit sometime and get the sailcloth. Anyway, that’s on hold for a bit.

I’ve...

RE: Wing Sails?

Haven't tried one, but they look cool. My feeling is they would work better on low-drag boats (like a cat), where the high-aspect shaped wing can operate at a higher apparent wind speed, and provide...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Another month, time for another update. J

2nd keel is getting some spray putty tonight. It is poured and assembled and fitted. The lead pour was done the same as last time, but didn’t go...

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

A quick update for today – I’ve been filling and sanding the hull. Lots of dust, lots of mess, but the hull is basically smooth now. I had sanded to 80 grit, then 120 to get it smooth. Now...

A little more progress...Hey, I've gotta keep up with you, smoofty37. :) The canting keel is completely waterproof now. I have basically created a flexible wetbox around the inside of the keel.

RE: Volvo 70 Ericsson Build Log

Great link. Yes, I have come across RYSA before, but I forgot about them again, and only found them again today. They have the Pekabe stock. For what you get, they are not so expensive. I will...
