You don't need all steel gears. Get the aluminium idler gear (LXJJ94) and nylon top gear (LXJF38) for more strength.

Cheaper than cvd's are the traxxas steel drive yokes (LXJG59). I used these...

That should be alright with the aluminium idler. Get spare outdrives if you like, though the newer rtrs come with strong (single pin) ones anyway.

You don't need a receiver crystal if you have a synthesised receiver, you'll need a TX (transmitter) crystal for the transmitter.

You'd have to charge lots and lots of RC batteries to drain your car battery, but it is always possilbe if you have an older or weaker car battery.
