Some folks I have talked to are particular about getting 'original' but when they aren't available you might as well make them.

I used to restore vintage automobiles. a set of gasket punches...

I just went and looked again and what I thought was part of the fuse was actually the canopy.
I stand corrected..the fuse does look the same.

while I'm not at all familiar with this planes evolution all the dirty birdy's I've ever seen had a tall thin fuse...not a box type.
I looked at the bridi models on that classic pattern planes site...

Went through the steps outlined in Dean Pappa's article and a couple observations:

1) I think the extra .5 inch is ABOUT right. The jump in RPM is not so violent...just a noticeable jump like...

I tried to find an exhaust flange gasket for my webra 50 and ended up just making one. it was easy...got thin gasket paper from auto part store and tapped lightly against surface to make impression...

One more thing I thinking about is once the length is correct, where to set needle on the ground.

I moved the pipe 1/2" back by putting in a 1/2" aluminum coupler.
If the pipe still acts peaky I'm considering trying a hatori type (flat disK) pipe.
Even though the Macs has baffles it still...

could be...even my f3d planes were very smooth on the controls...no exponential needed.

the plans (from the kitter...not the original) said to put the cg at 4 3/8 but I ended up...

I have flown modern F3D planes before so the speed is nothing to me.
Still I was amazed how clean this airframe is especially given its age.

Of course one solution would be to switch to a mini pipe like they have on the "just engines" site...but then that wouldn't be period correct ;)

so in my previous post regarding post flight questions for the Minare Cees mentioned that tuning my pipe for max rpm may not be the best policy for pattern. The idea being I'm looking for consistent...

My pipe HAS been cut for maximum RPM. I had been trying to get info on how pattern flyers cut their pipes but could find no...
