This can be done, you need to mount the gyro in the correct orientation.

Buy him a FS-GT2 ? or some gaffer tape over the buttons ? He's 5.... he'll grow out of the fiddle...

I'd suggest a bell crank arrangement for your throttles.... put the servo somewhere safer :)
