RE: Does anyone still carry the permagrit sanding bars?

Also... I bought both course and fine grit of the various blocks and tools. I've found, for balsa, that the fine grit works the best in most cases. I probably use the fine grit tools about 80-90% of...

RE: Does anyone still carry the permagrit sanding bars?

Ditto.

I learned about permagrit in an MA column by Bob Hunt, and consider it some of the best workshop advice he's ever given.

RE: BTE Venture 60 Kits Available This Week

The LE sheeting was easy enough to do, as I described in my other thread, so I'm not sure that I'd bother with getting a second wing. 1/16 is plenty good for flight loads, but I know it wouldn't work...

RE: BTE Venture 60 Kits Available This Week

Well, I didn't do a full build thread, but I posted a short thread about mine, that included some customizations. Link

RE: from what plane?

acroba, looking at abu's link and your comment, the number 147599-10 is likely the drawing & part number from which that individual part of the assembly was made (i.e. drawing number 147599, part...

RE: Midwest Super Stearman plans?

Ahhh, thanks for the update from Midwest - too bad, but I guess it's wasn't worth their time to run copies and ship them (at least not for the price that they would need to charge).

Hopefully...

RE: buried Spitfires

I feel the same way - I could only imagine the airframes submerged in a pool of water & muck for 50 years after the crates started rotting & leaking. No amount of grease paper would help preserve...

RE: Midwest Super Stearman plans?

Have you asked Midwest? I'd be curious to know what they say, and if they can still supply the old plans.

RE: Does anyone make a good B-17 ARF kit?

No problem... just understand that it can be misinterpreted because this is the Kit Building forum, which typically doesn't deal with ARFs. Not knocking ARFs, though, as many of us also "assemble"...

A ton of pictures at this webpage (I found by chance with google); just do a quick scroll down through this page, and you'll know if this project is for you in about 30 seconds!

RE: Corpus Christi,TX Clubs?

Texas is generally an arid land, which is now compounded by a historic drought cycle - one that experts say may last until 2018 or so. While a rocky, dry, brown, dead grass field is ok for myself and...

RE: LHS Rant!

I hate to admit it, but the LHS owner is probably right. He could stock an assortment of 50 different kits, but will likely only sell a few within 6 months.

My observation, through 40 years in...

RE: Corpus Christi,TX Clubs?

That's a shame. Down in the coastal plains, with so much open space, it's amazing to hear that it's hard to establish a flying site, with or without government help. Not much RC participation there,...

RE: Can Keith Sparks spark the build comeback?

Tucker, you raise a very good point, though we need to understand the era in which those Royal kits were produced. Years ago, a new builder (who was almost always a new flyer) would build easy...

RE: AMA Scale N.A.T.S.

I hear ya. The only problem is that, in the future, gas prices are unlikely to be significantly lower than they are now. Even if the price were to drop by 50 cents/gal, there is only a <$30...

RE: KIT vs RTF Cost Analysis

An indirect point you made rather nicely, as it would apply to me for anyone who might ask: "Don't bother asking me to build something for you... you couldn't afford it."

I say this only because it's relevant to your frustrations: I think you're banging your head up against larger issues than just those of model airplanes. In all my years, I've never seen mistrust of...

RE: over-priced sandpaper and more

If your setting up a shop, invest in a set of Perma-Grit blocks and don't look back. Best investment I've ever made. Aircraft Spruce is one source.

RE: Scale accessories with a lathe/mill?

Learning to use an English Wheel may be more up your alley (link). It takes a lot of practice to master, but the metal work is unique and one-of-a-kind in the hands of a craftsman (not me!).

RE: Titebond III compressing balsa

Agreed. Should the day come when you want to repaint it, just fill in areas along the ribs with extra primer or filler, and sand it all smooth with a block (and a light touch).
