Default Bp 2197 turbine-oil for lubrication?

Hello guys

The Simjetmanual says that I should use Exxon 2380 or Aeroshell 500 OR 560 turbineoil.
I wonder if I can use Bp:s turbinoil 2197 instead.
On our MD-80 fleet we have change from Exxon 2380 to Bp 2197 oil.

I know that Bp 2197 have a higer temperature when the oil will oxidate.

Best regards Tomas Eklund

Hi Thomas,

I'll see what I can find spec wise on the BP 2197. If it's a newer product then it may very well be useable, although strictly speaking you should adhere to what's recommended in the manual. (I know of several other types of turbine oil that aren't listed but work just fine...)

Hi Kevin

I looked at the oil-cans and I read out following information:

Bp 2380 meets : MIL-PRF-23699F-STD
NATO CODE 0-156
9150-01-476-1074

BP 2197 meets : MIL-PRF-23699F-HTS
NATO CODE 0-156/0-154
9150-01-439-0756

I hope that the information will help you to find out if I can use 2197oil.

Best regards Tomas Eklund

Hi Thomas,

I found the same information from the respective product sheets. Other than the fact that the 2197 seems to ba a bit more viscous, I can't really see much difference either. Having said this, it would be unwise of me to endorse a product without the factory approving it. We will forward your question along to Lars at SimJet and see what he says...
