I am helping a group of folks that are building a large model of a corporate jet. It is going to be in the 60-70lb range. We are early enough in the design process that we can design around existing retracts so as to avoid having custom gear made. Where is the best place to look for gear this size. We are not looking for perfectly scale gear, just reliable and functional for something this weight.

I have used Behotec c50 retracts in 3 large models ranging between 18to 35 kg. I have found them excellent and robust. If you have a multiple wheel bogie and large wheels of 4" plus you may find it difficult to pull the gear up. Single wheels 4" on a long oleo leg is not a problem. On my Horten I have a 6" nose wheel , but have a second ram to help lower and retract the gear. The Behotec struts are superb if you can find one suitable. On my Arado which has a 4 wheel bogie I have just converted them to electric and this seems to work ok.

As you model is similar size to mine I would consider the Behotec c60.

We will have dual wheels on each gear. The gear legs are relatively short though at about 6-8" long. We will investigate the Behotecs. I notice on their website it says that the c60's are not currently available.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

The other company is suffering from PR in regards to what some say are quality issues.

It sounds like the C50s will do for you with such a short leg. Might be worth asking if you could have one to try the action. They come with a nice large tank and a valve and all the pipework when you order a set. You can order then in North America from Altecare and I would give them a ring and chat about your requirement.

I'm having good luck with Tom Cook's MK 30's in my SR-71.

The sides of the retracts are machined from solid aluminum and are pretty thick. They hold up very well, and because of their mass, don't bend under anything short of a disastrous landing.... really rugged retracts.

I've a dry weight of 66 lbs, and weigh's 80 lbs on take off.
I've had to plumb the system in such a manner to avoid as many airline 'T's as possible, by use of his distribution air manifold which works great.
Each main has 3 tires, and nose has 2. Mains in total are around 4.5 pounds each, including retract, strut, wheels, and disk brakes on each tire, all on about a 10 inch long strut when uncompressed, so there is quite a bit of leverage / load to overcome, and they do well with it.
