No a competition but only trying to figure out the pros and cons of each one. I have a Merlin 140 for it..
Regards,
PS: There are two big threads in the RCU, one for CARF and one for SM. I'm reading both and the purpose of this new one is trying to summarize the advantages or not.

Sign me up for this thread, i've been doing quite a bit of reading over the past 6 months on everything out there - gotten some great feedback from a few of the best sticks and modelers and it is still sort of a wash.
Cheetah for power (140), but might do a Rhino if I went skymaster.

I've owned both the CARF and SM Hawks. They are very different. The CARF is light, works well with 120-160 size engines, and flies like a sport plane. The SM is a bit bigger, a bit heavier, has more surface detail, needs at least a 160 to get the most out of it, and uses more energy to transition between maneuvers.

All I can say is my Carf Hawk is my favorite plane and one of if not the best and easiest flying planes I've ever flown. I'm not exaggerating. It just flies true. I did just get a new Ultra Flash and from starting to read that thread, my opinion may change when that gets built.

Marty,
Can't wait to fondle your Hawk in the hot humid Kentucky air under the tent!
I am looking to replace my classic flash with a CARF Hawk or maybe a SM Viper this winter. I am looking forward to seeing all of these different options in a few weeks to better educate my choice.Dan has the Extreme Jets Hawk and we just maidened it Saturday - flew great - haven't got to work her over yet but initial feel is great.

James,
What's even sadder is that we have "the cooler" tent than the one on the other side of the taxiway
. As far as fondling my Hawk, at this point in my life I'll take what I can get
. And on that note, have you decided on a hairdo for this years event? Not much time left. Looking forward to pitting next to you guys.

Haven't come up with the final shape or color yet, but yes, I've been working on it since September
Let's just hope Rose has that vending machine stocked for my arrival!

I liked my CARF Hawk more than my Ultra Flash. Granted, my Hawk was powered by a K-170, so it had a lot of power if I wanted to use it. Vertical maneuvers were especially fun.
