I have got one that I have had for about three years and do very little with it but it is nice.
Go with the larger one and you will be happy. The software that comes with it will do the job but will not import files and is limited on what it will do. the upgrade software is about $200 and will let you import and convert files from Coral Draw and I think that is how most people are doing it. I'm just not that good with software.

I also have the larger one. They are a great tool, especially if you like to dress up your planes with graphics, or even cut out templates for painting. I sue mine with the stock Dr. Stika software and Corel Draw. There is a support group on Yahoo where you can get just about any graphic or logo you want or need. Thousands of them are available and are free to use. The guys there are also really good about telling you how to solve problems and do it correctly, they have been a big asset.

Go to Yahoo.com and go to the groups, then do a search for RCGRAPHICS. You will find the group there and they have an archive which you can download most of the uploaded items (including the Calvin..;-)).
ALso another site (http://www.lochert.cc/logos/) offers most of the coporate logos which can be used in Corel Draw.
Good luck

Milton,
You can cut and paste from Corel to DrStika.
I have the SX-8. Works great. I can see where the SX-12 would also be nice, but the SX-8 can do about anything that you would need for RC use.
I haven't used mine as much as I thought. I just don't have the time to learn Corel Draw well enough to create some of the more complex custom graphics. There is a lot of work involved when you don't know the software.
You can also go to The Roland Store and download vector art for $1.00 per image.

Hey guys, another question, where is the best place to gets the knives? Or the Vinyl, what do you use for paint masks? Like to find out all about these things!
How about some pictures of stuff you have made with them, on your planes and everthing else!

I think the last vinyl and blades I bought were from signsupply.com, but I will have to check to make usre. You can also find the vinyl on E-bay. The 60 degree knife blade is the one I was told to use if cutting Monokote, I have one but have not tried it yet. You can buy 12 inch wide rolls of vinyl, but another option is to find a local sign shop which will give you their scraps (sometimes free), and this stuff makes a good masking material. The 3 year vinyl I use for my marking, last longer than most of my planes...:-)

What have you guys been using for vinyl? Do you have a preferred brand of vinyl?
I figured the 2 mil cast vinyl would be best for our use. I have had 3 mil and 3.5 mil vinyl, and I think they are too thick.
If you can still find some Super Ultracote, it also works well . A 60 degree blade works best for cutting covering. 45 degree for everything else.
I have been getting some of my supplies from the Sign Warehouse
www.signwarehouse.com
They have about everything you need.

Thanks guys
I'll take a look on E-Bay.
If you get one John, I'd be interested in hearing how you go (size/software). and how you like it if you find the time.

Oh, I got one. I got the SX12. If I had the money to spend I would have gotten the SX15, I just bought the best I could afford.
It came with the Dr. Stika software, looks very basic, will buy ordering Corel Draw9 today, its $35 and seems to be what alot are using to make stuff.
So far, only made a few things on it, very easy to use, have to get the cutter depth set just right but I think Ive got it now as I can cut 3/4" tall letters pretty easy.
Now to just learn how to do more with it! So far VERY HAPPY.
Thanks!

pretty interesting thread here. Thats good looking work there John. I have been looking for a do it yourself logo maker myself but cant afford one now so I look for logos online and hand cut them myself. I have an old beater Extra 300 I just added some stuff to. Its the Punisher logo
I use these guys for my templates, they come in pdf form so you can dl them, print them and trace it onot monokote or whatever you use.
Love to see more work and maybe we can get a online collection of this stuff together?

Guys! Don't buy software! I can send you all Adobe Illustrator 8.0 for nothing (other than S&H) It is such a versatile program. You almost need a college degree to run it, but most can figure it out no problem. This program saves in .ia, illustrator format, and .eps. I MSN messenger, and if you want a d/load from me, you can find me at [email protected].
I'm hlping a guy in our club get set up with a Panther plotter/cutter. It's a lot to learn, but well worth the results.
These pics show what it will do.

Has the Adobe Illustrator copyright been released to public domain? Or do you have an unlimitedd license to distribute it?
Please clarify.
Thanks.
Bill.
