Our membership fluctuates around 40 and has done so for the last several years.
Some members, a few, only fly occasionally. We have two instructors, field marshal and a safety officer. A very friendly group. The range of aircraft runs from park flyers to 1/4 scale gas aerobatic types and warbird racing. Very few pilots limit themselves to one type only but will at one time or another fly anything. Come to think of it I have been modeling a long, long, time and have never been in a club where the personal sniping that goes on in the AMA dicussion forum was even thought of.

Our club only has seven members but then again we have only been formed for a year and we live in a town with only 14,000 people. At least we never have to wait to fly.

Hey Branded, Blue Max is just under 200 dues paying members. But as so many before have said, only about 25% of those are active.
Sorry for the double post. Things timed out and I didn't realize that it still posted.

so it's the same world over, people like the thought of belonging to a club but don't participate. Strange
50 with about 18 regulars in ours.

We have just about 120 members and we cap it at 125. We have enjoyed a large growth in the past couple of years. We also have a core group that flies most of the time. Its sad, because many members I haven't even met yet. (Been in for 1.5 years now.) However, if they want to pay their dues and not fly, they are welcome to.

30 here too. Only about 10 of us that get out more than once a month. I'm probably the only one that flys 1 or 2 times a week. A recent check of the log book shows that I've got out flying 40 times this year. Woohooooo!

An interesting side statistic to this poll would be how many clubs are close to the maximum members allowed?
Our club is just about maxed out and typically ends that way year after year.

I just joined our club this year and only have 27 members, of whom only 7 fly. The problem I've heard and seen over and over is that although clubs talk a good game concerning offering flight instruction, too many, if not most seldom, if ever deliver.
Before I get flamed, what I mean is when clubs sell their hobby to newcomers, the sales pitch is something on the order of "We will be more than happy to teach you to fly and at no charge". The beginner gets the impression that he will be able to get help on a regular basis, such as any time he needs help and that help will be for free. But what is the norm is at best, 15 minutes of instruction, once a week. Also, chances are, he is not told of this: http://webhome.idirect.com/%7eironsidz/instructor.htm
Then there is the assurance that crashing is all but necessary as part of the learning process. All of the above is the main reason membership numbers tend to stagnate.
Then again, it's not out of the question that the veteran flier may not want his flight line constantly congested.

Small-town Alabama, with 20-ish members and 8-10 really active ones.We are the Walker (or is it Walker-Winston?) County RC, fomerly the Hay Valley Fliers. Loosely organized, but we like to fly...

Crashing is simple part of the hobby. In almost 20 years of doing this I've never heard anyone tell a newbie that crashing is a neccessary part of the learning process!!!
I've heard people tell; " newbies that every crash can teach you something "
I've also heard people tell; " newbies that if you can't afford to crash it you shouldn't be flying it in the first place"
No I'm not flaming you... Just Strongly disagreeing

Crashem,
"Then there is the assurance that crashing is all but necessary as part of the learning process." All but necessary, not absolutely necessary. There is a difference.
The necessary part of crashing is the impression that the newbies get from the old hands. Beginners ask about the possibility of crashing and they are assured that they will most likely crash before they solo and there after. In their minds, they get the impression that crashing is a necessary part of the learning process. Yes indeed, several members of the clubs I've belonged to actually used the words "crashing is a necessary part of the learning process". In other words, you WILL crash, not that you might crash, but YOU WILL CRASH.

We at RCRC have about 45 members. Only 10 or so fly ,and only an average of 17 members show up for meeting. What do you guys do to hold the interest and draw members to the meeting or flying field.
