ESC temp. range

Would anyone know the critical temperature range of an ESC called Victor 884? If no one has ever heard of it then please tell me the critical temp. range of any speed controller thats not a very weak ***** one..thanks

The Victor 884 is a speed controller specifically engineered for robotic applications. The 40A capacity, low voltage drop, and peak surge capacity make the Victor 884 ideal for drive systems while its braking options and precise control meet the demanding needs of arms and lift systems.

A cooling fan operated by the input voltage of the speed controller insures that the Victor 884 is continously cooled.
This is what I found on the net/web. Not sure if you can use it for RC application since its designed for robotics. When used in robotics there should be in-line breakers to prevent it from overheating. From what I have read, when the esc provides current to the motor, it also provides a proportional current to the cooling fan, meaning when you run the motor at full speed, the cooling fan also run on full speed to keep it cool.

Thats interesting, i didnt know that current significantly depended on the heat given off. I do own a couple of those vics and the fans are connected to the input so they are always at highest constant speed. It works fine for RC applications from what i know, engineers say its designed for robotics because of its strong ability to withstand stalls, and quick current inversions. But anyhow, I did however know that the breakers protect it from shortage and from stalls (almost the same thing) but i was wondering what its critical temperature would be in C or F. Anyone got any ESC thermo numbers you can throw at me? I would love to know if i even need the big fan on top...

P.S. If anyone knows other differences between IFI Victors and Hobby ESCs please dont hesitate and leme know!

I See, what I was trying to say was the cooling fan is dependent on the power given to the motor and not the temperature. But this is wrong anyways. This is when the fan is wired to the output lines, which can lead to overheating.

I misunderstood what I have read. You are correct. The fan should be wired onto the input wires which will turn the fan on all the time at full power.

Wouldn’t it be difficult to monitor the temp while its in the rc car. I just wouldn’t have piece of mind having that esc on my car. I would be always worried that it will overheat.

Maybe you can remove the fan and put some heatsinks on them. Not sure if you can connect the FETs with the heatsinks (it might cause a short) I think you might be okay since we usually only run 6 – 7 cells on our rc cars, that’s 7.2v to 8.4v and the victor 884 can handle up to 15v. Not sure about amp draw with rc motors though which is usually what causes the heat build up.

Don’t they cost over $100.00 retail. With that amount, there are a lot of multi-featured ESCs in the market that has thermal and overload protection(breakers). Other features to consider over a robotics esc, radio priority, polarity protection, programmable etc.

This is just my opinion. To add, Its always cool to have something different and unique from the usual in the RC world.

yea, to be honest i bought the two victors (which btw cost 150each [US]) for robotics purposes, and they can really endure a torture. I have seen them do amazing things, +they have the highest current rating of up to 60A-continuous! at 15V or something. So from my understanding there is no chance that they will overheat and burn out on an rc car with 10V tops at 4A tops even without a fan (but thats always a good idea). Ill try them on my next electric rc car just for the sake of experimentation. And i would not want to try to reach that critical temperature to measure it because i can obviously blow something in the vic. anyhow ill get post the difference between standard hobby ECSs and vics
