The air filter oil is an essential aspect of protecting your nitro engine. Essential, no doubt. The oil lubricates the foam and causes more dust particles or whatever else is in the air to be trapped in the filter instead of going right into your carb. If you choose not to oil/clean your air filter regularly or not at all, you could be looking at severe engine troubles. Anything besides clean, filtered air going into that carb is not a pretty picture.

Well, you need to use some kind of oil in the filter. Pretty much any oil will do the job. Air filter oil is formulated to be "sticker" than regular oil so should work better at trapping microscopic contaminates. Other "sticky" oils are 1:1 car and motorcycle air filter oil and chainsaw bar oil. But like I said, any oil will work. For example, on my lawn mowers that use an oiled filter I just use regular 30W engine oil.

I would not use just any old oil. I would go to your local motorcyle shop and buy an entire quart for around $8.00 or so, as opposed to spending the same for buying the oil at a hobby shop. Good air filtration is VERY crucial with small engines such as our nitros.

Go for dedicated filteroil, you will see as soon as you get it on your fingers, how sticky it really is. That´s how it does the job of keeping fine dust particles out of your engine. A foam filter alone only helps keep out bicycles and stuff like that
