hey all,
Well, first time visitor and poster! I'm really glad I found this site surfing the web. Also to note I did a search on this forum looking for my question but could not find an answer. For the last few weeks I have been shopping for a model kit for a 350Z mostly to have fun putting it together then putting it on a shelf because I love the 350z. My brother in law has always been into electric RC's and we talked today about gas powered RC's, or Nitro's I think you call them if I'm correct, and I found a ton of 350Z body's online. I want to get a gas powered RC in the Z now. I think the 200mm is where I'll probably start. I want to get a gas powered chassis with the option to upgrade parts etc. I want to get the 350Z body and it appears I have to get a drifter set up if that's the right category.
What is a good chassis that will fit a 200mm 350Z body? Don't want to spend a lot.
When you see 200mm I assume that's the width right? How about a standard length on these?
Is there a standard chassis size that will fit all 200mm body's?
Is the 1/10 the same, or will it fit a 200mm body?
I found this link at towerhobbies and it's pretty much what I'm looking for but pretty pricey. is there a cheaper chassis out there? I don't mind spending 30 bucks on the body and around 100 buck for a gas engine.

My price range is $100 for a gas chassis. I assume that hopups are some type of upgrade right? Are there a lot of upgrades you can do with electric cars? Upgrades are somthing I would like to do every once in a while. Whether it be for speed or handling.
I found a great sticky in the road cars forum for gas rc's beginner info. A question I have is, i see that some of those engines need a cut out in the body for the motor. Can you adjust the body height so you don't have to cut anythng? Or can you change that engine part. I like a car that has the lowered look to it.
I found this gas 350Z on ebay. It appears like this guy makes his own chassis or something. I did a search to try and figure out the chassis and couldn't find anything. I don't like that 350 body. The body looks cheap. I don't know the dementions of the cars yet, what size body fits this chassis? Is this thing junk? It is brand new. here's a link: [link]http://cgi.ebay.com/Nitro-Gas-Radio-Control-1-10-Nissan-350Z-Race-Car-RC-NR_W0QQitemZ200084743194QQcategoryZ19168QQrdZ1QQss PageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem[/link]

I'm afraid you simply cannot get a hobby grade RC car (one that will go at any speed, be wrenchable and upgradable) for $100. You're looking at $250 for the cheapest car worth having, but that would be an RTR, including everything you need, radio, engine, etc. I see you've been searching on ebay, so you are not averse to second hand? I'm afraid once again, that second hand RC cars are highly NOT recommended for beginners. the best thing you could do is go to a local shop that deals with these things and talk to the person behind the counter. I too love the 350Z, this hobby is very rewarding, but it's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. Especially nitro. Imagine...I'm about to spend over 1000 euros on a new kit and engine, and I already have a $400 radio and many other things. Ok, that is another extreme, but you get my point. I strongly suggest that you do take the plunge into this hobby especially as a car lover, but even more strongly, I suggest you buy a new one from a local establishment, where you can get spare parts, and most importantly support in the early days. Second hand cars are normally thrashed to pieces or out of date, that's why they're being sold. You'll need to change, repair and otherwise maintain something which is very new to you. Don't buy someone else's problem, create some of your own.
EDIT: Also, on most of the touring cars, no, there is no need to cut the shell for the engine head (it's the cooling head of the engine that you can see, and I'm afraid it is absolutely necessary that it is the size it is), they normally sit just below. Many .12 size engines have small cooling heads anyway, it might be something to worry about if later on, you wanted to put a high power .18 engine in. You WILL however, need to cut a large hole in the windshield, and many smaller holes in the rear windshield. This is necessary for cooling on nitro models, but can easily be done in a 'pretty' way.

Thanks for the info. Closest shop for me is 4o miles away and they have mostly airplane stuff. So I'll probably do most of my research and shopping online. I'm checking on line for pricing of things so I can get a feel for the market.

Check out my edit, just in case you didn't see it. I'm glad you're still considering it, nitro is the way to go in my opinoin, it's just too much fun, but it will be a trial by fire (perhaps literally!!), most people start when they are young with electrics. That's not to say that electrics are for the young, far from it, in actual fact the electrics can be made to go generally faster than the nitros, with some investment. Nitro is a lot more maintenance intensive though.
May I suggest this? I realise it's a lot more than you wanted to spend, but I promise it is worth it...it's a very well supported brand (HPI), it is a well known platform, the RS4 model, it's 4 wheel drive, independent oil filled suspension, comes with the nitro engine, the radio gear, everything you need.

Ya thanks, I had that greddy 350Z link in my first thread if you missed it. I made the trek to the hobby shop and bought an electric. I decided not to go with nitro based on some good advice from the shop. All the maintenance involved is really to much time I do not have. So what did I buy? I went with the RTR Traxxas 4-Tec model#4310. I'm pretty stoked on it. It's fast enough for me at 24+ mph and you can do some upgrades and adjust just about everything on the chassis. And It fits nearly any 190mm body which I'm really happy about so I can get the 350Z body!
Thanks for the help and it's time to start learning about this thing!
