Without totally sacrificing acceleration (necessary for building up speed for those jumps, I'd say 18/49). Of course, if you're only concerned with top speeds, then you can gear it much higher than that. Not something I would do though, I have cars which are designed to go fast (tourers, 1.8th buggies) and my monster for, er, monstering.

I have 13/52 in my savage x and the low end is affected very little and top speed is about 36 according to the sheriff that used his radar gun.by the way it will still pull the front wheels off the ground on command

well i think 18/49 is the stock gearing that comes w/ the x. Question: why is my sons t-maxx 2.5 w/ upgraded 3.3 seem so much faster on the road than my savage? Is the gearing? weight differance? It seems 2 smoke it on the road, but will admit savage does'nt break nearly or remotely as often as the t maxx. just wondering what seems 2 make a mostly stock t maxx seem so much faster. only thing changed on t maxx is engine, gearing is stock.

The stock savage engine does not reach high rpms, probably due to the motor you put in the T-maxx, plus the large weight difference, it is faster. Are you sure the sav's shifting to second? Mine really gets going once it gets into second gear...I have the stock engine and 18/49 and I'm used to fast cars (I race 1/8th buggies and 1/10th touring cars) and I would never decribe it as 'slow', takes a while to get there, I admit, but once it's off...anyway, check the two speed, you should be able to hear it shifting clearly.

there is a big weight difference between both traxxas MT's and the savage, both the traxxas trucks are around the 9 pound mark, the savage is around 12, thats how the traxxas trucks can get such high speed with a size .20 engine.

18/49 and it will be a total dog down low or in the dirt. If you want more speed out of a 4.1 without neutering the engine with too high of gearing, get a 3spd.[8D]

Last year RC Driver magazine had a top speed shootout and there was a Savage there that did 60-70mph. I think the guy that owned it was a HPI employee.[8D]

I read this in several other threads but never actually say the article itself. Can you link it?
As for actually pushing close to 70MPH, the engine havd better be able to produce about 4BHP (4 real world HP, wich is abot 8 advertiseed HP) and making about 1.5 to 2 ft-lbf of torque (about 300-400oz-in) at 35000RPM on very high custom gears.
As for the calculations, assuming 6in diameter wheels, 22T Axial CB, and a 46T spur on a 3speed tranny, an engine turning 40000RPM will make 67.38MPH. This of course assumes the engine CAN actually reach 40000RPM and maintain its torque curve at this RPM to push these very high gears.
A nitro engine with these gears will not cut it. A gas engine with twice the gear ratio I mentioned above would probably be the bet, this of course is assuming that the weed eater engine could even reach 20000RPM.

I saw RCCarAction did a top speed contest and the fastest Savage they had went about 60+. Basically it had phaltline tires, the stock K 4.6, and it had significant weight removed. Probably weighed in at about 10lbs. He probably did have a custom 2 speed though, they didnt say. Impressive though[8D]

Yeah it had all carbon fiber and anything extra removed, but it never gave specifics on what he did to get that speed. It was for all intents and purposes a street savage. I believe it's official record was 67mph.

I'd run aluminum clutch shoes and 17/49 gears. the stock shoes will fry trying to turn a bigger gear ratio than that, and even with the aluminum clutch shoes and 1.1mm clutch springs, the truck will be kind of a dog with anything even slightly bigger than stock rubber.
