Default Home made Jetcat data cable

Having just started my second Jetcat installation and remembering the pain of trying to hide all the data cable on the previous model I thought I'd make up my own to the correct length. I have read the horror stories about blowing ECUs but after a bit of research it really doesn't look too bad.

First problem was to get the correct bits.

The jack is often refered to as a RJ11 jack but this is not entirely correct. The connector is the same size as for RJ11 but may or may not be the same. It needs to have 6 contacts and the easiest way is to look for a connector that is sold as 6P6C (just guessing at what this stands for but I find it easy to remember it as a 6 way plug with 6 connectors).

Next I saw a tester that will check the pins for you after the cable is made. This will check for open and cross-wired circuits and is really cheap. I checked my Jetcat cable with it and the sequence runs from 1-6 so checking the cables that I make should be really easy.

Only things left now are some cable, which is 6 core flat cable exactly the same as the Jetcat cable (except that it is grey and the colour coding is different) and a crimper. I will borrow the latter from a friend for the time being to see how I get on.

It will be a couple of days before I make the cable but I'll report back when it is done. If anyone has any pointers or corrections then that would be appreciated.

I have made several RJ11 and RJ45 patch leads, and I have noticed that the problems start to occur when you use cheap connectors and cheap crimp tools! I have had several cheap chinesse connectors break up or crack! Just be careful and make sure the cable checker gives you the OK! Good Luck!

Hi Darren

I can supply Data Cables to any length, for any engine.

Drop me an email with engine type, cable length.

Hear from you.

Really all you need is the correct cable now (6 parallel) and you're in business. No worries on the circuit - it is no mystery - just lay the cable flat and crimp one connector on right-side up and the one at the other end upside-down. Works like a charm everytime!
