Default Sullivan skywriter smoke pump in Boomerang Jet

Hi there,

I am planning to install a Sullivan skywriter smoke pump system in My Boomerang XL. Can anyone advise if this is a good choice and what would be the best voltage and set up to use for this pump.
Last but not least would you recomend 1 or 2 nozzles for smoke.
Finally, if anyone has some photos for smoke installation, same would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Regards.

Dany,

If you haven't purchased it yet, I would go with Tam's smoke system. He has it perfected for turbine use. The Sullivan may be a great piece, I don't know; I can just tell you I have have had no complaints/problems with Tam's system.

Dany if you allready have the sullivan, my best tip for you is get the Tams sprayers. I did my owns and did have some good smoke in mine but not the best. Actually I took the system out. But my friend is using same sull. pump in his Eurosport with the Tams sprayers and the smoke really looks good. Much better than mine. But only if you dont want to spend in the complete sys. But many people here will recomend you to go for the complete Tams sys. Best results.

Rgds

Alex,

thanks for the advice. I have also bought 2 Tam's sprayers, but was wondering whether i should use 1 or 2 for best results.

Thanks. Regards.

Two is better than one, but if one does the job for you then one it is, as long as you have smoke coming out the tail, you're in .

Hi,

Why not try it with one and see how you like it? Adding a second spray jet isn't a big deal. Personally, I don't see any difference in any of the smoke systems' performance, so I opted for the most economical, yet reliable system. I installed the TME Simple Smoke pump with one sprayer jet. It uses a 6V Rx pack and works MARVELOUSLY! I tested it yesterday with a Yellow F-15 (split exhaust) with a P-120. On the ground, the smoke seemed to come more from one side, but in the sky (yesterday was a beautiful, blue day), it looked like it billowed from both. I use a 1/8" inside-diameter tube on one side of the engine.

The system: $99 from Horizon.
The metal tube: $0.60.
The section of neoprene tubing: $1.00.
The section of tygon tubing: $3.00.
The battery pack: lying around.
The pride of D.I.Y. system setup (2 hrs), D.I.Y. smoke tank construction and the satisfaction of having AWESOME smoke every bit as good as systems costing twice the money: PRICELESS!

Like CARS said, if you have smoke coming out of the back, you're happy. Good luck with your project!

How much oil typically is carried on board? Would 16oz. be enough? I have a 64oz fuel tank on a boomer running a Artes Super Bee. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

It depends how often you want to use it, and how dense you want the smoke (the Skywriter is programmable). I have a 32 oz tank and it will last about 3 mins....

Wow, better plan for some more smoke space.....

So you don't think 16oz will be near enough?

Hi,

The F-15 centerline tank hold approximately 33 ounces, and probably only lasts 2.5 minutes. You can adjust the volume on the TME Simple Smoke system, and I think the Sullivan one is the same. On the TME, I have it set up for max volume.

32 oz is the average smoke tank that most jets can carry, I have a 24oz. in my Roo and I'm adding another 24oz. why? you may ask, 24oz. is not enough for me and because I moved the turbine electronics to the back to get a better dry CG I now have the other side of my fuel tank open and room for the other 24oz. tank.

Thank for your input. Could you please advise lipo capacity a well as pump settings (flow rate). Are you using a Futaba or JR TX?
Understood that you have to set channel to reverse on Futaba radios when plugging Sullivan Skywriter pump, is this correct?

Thanks. Regards.

I'm using a JR9303. Smoke is on AUX3 which is controlled by the right hand slider, so we can vary the smoke manually from a thin whisp to billowing clouds. I've tapped into my 4400 mah ecu pack for power.

One advantage an internal engine like the F-16 has is that it has that long exhaust pipe to mix and vaporize the smoke fluid. And even with one tube, there is still some liquid that makes it all the way through and drips off the end. With external mounted engines, you might have to play with a bit to get the desired effect.

Oh, and smoke oil is messy! Make sure your overflow drain is below the aircraft!

Wayne22,

Thank you very much for detailed explanation. One more question, if i want to run a separate battery for the pump, what capacity would you suggest and could i run same on a 3S Lipo as i have read somewhere that this pump works best on 12 volts.

Thanks again.

They recommend between 6 to 12 volts and it only draws 250Mah, If you have a small two or three cell Lipo hanging around, it would do just fine......

Wayne 22,

Thanks again for your input. Actually i am planing to have a removable smoke system which could be easily transfered from one plane to the other.

Will post some photos when system will be accomplished.
Regards.

The Sullvan pump works absolutely GREAT for jets, the current consumption is so low i run a 7.4V 300Mah Lipo smoking all day long with no problem !
