IJMC / Cyprus 2009, what happened?

My Feedback: (102)
I recieved an email that said that Cyprus has withdrawn from the plan to host the IJMC WJM 2009. Does anyone know what has happened in this regard? I have receieved phone calls from some of my friends from other teams who are very concerned about what will happen now and where it will be held. Perhaps the US should step in and make a plea for it here in 2009, huh?
I was looking forward to going to Cyprus, what happened?

Right now it looks like the location is up in the air for a few more months.

"Let's have the event at the AMA flying site"
I'LL COOK FOR THE TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I'm only 57 miles from the site)
Seriously tho....it is disappointing...as I had planned to travel with the team to Cyprus..I do hope they solve the mystery quickly....and professionally.

Gentlemen,
There is no mystery covering this. The simple truth is that the other part of the organising committee lied about airport availability, to me first and to the other delegates later. He kept lying about that as well as other matters, until he could lie no more (a month ago). The airport would be available only for ten days in August, which would make the cost of travelling and accommodation unaffordable. We would end up having another expensive NI. Also, because of the event timing, I would not be able to book One hotel for the whole event period (Ithe teams would be scattered in many small batches in hotels around the area). Simply, the whole thing would end up in disaster.

I am sorry to have to say this but I hope that all the people on RCU who gave the Northern Ireland organisers such a kicking (and they know who they are) and told us how much better Cyprus was going to be will now eat their words. Anyone who thinks that organising a WJM is easy has no idea. You are depending on people volunteering to give up their holiday time, or to take time off work to run the event for very little in the way of reward, or, in the case of Northern Ireland just a load of complaints.

Damn!
You guys are great
. Winnie promised Avi from Israel, that he will get the jwm in the event that Cypres doesn't get it right in the preparation. In my opinion, there is no need for a new poll, as long as Avi is still in the boat to run the masters 2009!
It wasn't new, that you need a team to organise and run a world-masters competition with roughly 100 pilots. The NI-team new that before and Chris will know that for sure. I am happy that he asked the right questions early enough to prevent a disaster like NI. In my opinion the next jwm have to be well organised to keep the event alive.

David

i guess if you organise this in Israel a LOT of countries will not attend due to safety issue,s.
that is why Cyprus was ideal for this.
one would need a country that is more neutral...and are willing to have truckloads of crap pored over them from critics....

Sandor is right. There is too much "concern" by some countries to just allow it to take place in Isreal. I know polticis is not supposed to matter here, but lets face it, it does. I have been told by several nations that they cannot attend the WJM if it takes place there and they will be pulling their membership from the IJMC if this happens. I do not think the solution is as easy as "giving it to Isreal". If the IJMC really wants to solve this problem, then they should allow for more proposals at the January meeting and allow the members who attend that meeting to vote and decide where the event will be held.

Were you at the WJM in Northern Ireland? I was and it certainly was not a disaster. Just shows you can't keep all of the people happy all of the time!

I'm sure the USA would make a good job of it. Please consider making it spectator friendly and near to tourist attractions.
e.g. Ca or Fl.

The AMA National Flying site recently hosted the F3D World Championships. The flying facility is top notch.
As far as tourist attractions goes....well Muncie is not the meca of entertainment but it's only 3 or so hours to Chicago.

John,
Tahfiet is Dave Buesken (Dave Burns' friend). As I said earlier, if I could have the airfield in late June, or late September, there would have been no issues. Remember, Cyprus' main income IS Tourism and when everyone in this world can be on holiday, they come to Cyprus. July and August this place is a ZOO!! and an expensive one.
I never complained in NI about the organisation, I only complained about the catering!!!
. I know how tough it is to organise an event of this size and I am not scared of going through it. All I said was that it would become really expesive for competitors to attend and they would be scattered all around the island. NI became expensive for everyone who attended. Had it been reasonably priced, you wouldn't hear so many complaints. My 2 Euro cents.
In saying all that, I will still apply to host the Masters in 2011, when I make damn sure I have the airfield when I want it.

Sandor, you have a nice big field outside your window.
All you have to do is move the cow.
We can have the WJM in Holland !

Switzerland would be nice and we would be even more "nice" to our Pilots/Helpers/Supporters,
visting the JWM in the Swiss-Alps. :-)
But remember, it all takes time. We just started to lobby on the right spots!
Maight be, we are ready in 2011 or 2013.
